There's a few periods of the year where the black basses decide to hide and the Others decide to come take their place instead. We're on the cusp of shad spawn but not quite there yet in the shallows. It doesn't help my pursuits that Roberts (27k acres) has risen 12+ inches in the last week, all cold rain plus cold air temps. That said, I wore the black crappies out again the other night with a tube. I'll take whatever bite is available.

The bass didn’t want to play despite some great looking cover on this lake, but found some post spawn crappie (up to 1.5 lbs.) moving back out toward deep water, so still got to swing on some fish. Probably a change of venue next trip though.

In the UK spring is a diabolical period for most freshwater species. They're spawning, the three month closed season restricts where you can fish and it's generally a struggle. As a result you end up finding bizarre ways to get your fix. Today's challenge was some sticklebacks I'd spotted a while ago. Tactics for these mini monsters was going to be 0.6g cheburaska weight with a 1" yellow maggot to attract their attention, then a tiny size 22 hook on a tiny bit of line with a spec of gulp on it to catch them. Mission accomplished.

Launched the ole canoe around 6:30, slow going for the first 30-45 minutes with only a tiny SMB, then the skipjack and white bass went crazy. The tails were all crooked on my tiny crappie minnow baits so I just ripped them off and the fish approved

Changed lakes today. Sunny for much of the afternoon with a steady but light breeze. Started on bass and caught 3, but no size to them. After an hour, I checked out a brushpile in the area and found the crappie were moving out and starting to regroup. Nothing but males on all the spots I then started running, but caught around 60 fish, so it was fun doing all that swinging for a change. The jigging rod got a good workout today B)

It appears the muskie are done spawning and moving into the trees. They'll use them until the weeds get up good. I was bass fishing today and caught a 36.5" out of a laydown on my flippin rig, and a 37" with a 3" tube on 8# YZH. Both fish are beat up from the spawn. That skinny 37" was pretty lethargic. Only took a few minutes to land it on the 8#.

The muskie bite has been terrible lately with the spawn going on. Looking forward to the weeds getting up and the crank and blade bite getting going.

Somehow got a catfish double , one was hooked and the other just twisted up into the line a thousand times. They also had a branch interwoven into the mess

Now that's worth the tangled mess.

Had a great day today at my favorite little pond. Had only caught one crappie since October (but the bass bit all winter) so I wasn't expecting much. Caught 7 crappie and 4 bass in a couple of hours. All the crappie were much bigger than normal and I think this one would be my PB ever. Out of the 11 fish, ten bit on a Beetle Spin grub without the spinner. The biggest bass of the day (3.5 lbs) hit a red lizard on the first cast of the day. Another fish hit it on the second cast but ripped the tail off and I never got a bite with the missing tail after that.

Had a short but fun morning dragging for catfish on Mountain Island Lake. Fish were scattered and seemed to be around spawning/post-spawn groups of crappie. 6 catfish in about 3 hrs and some white perch and crappie on the UL in between cats. Biggest was pushing 30 lbs, a ton of fun in my little tin boat. I had a 15 that was foul-hooked in the dorsal that was a challenge to subdue without a net. IMG_0250.jpeg.8f447e51e9f6e2720775dd5a1138d133.jpeg

Had a very windy day this week so we decided to just anchor and see if the channel cats were hungry.

Doing my best to make @Team9nine proud this morning. 15" on the nose. Caught it on my flippin rig pitching laydowns. My best crappie in several years.

Just like @T-Billy, doing my best @Team9nine impression today.  Glorious spring day out there.  Even my 5 year old boy caught some crappies too.  Fish have finally moved shallow and are preparing to spawn soon with water temps in the mid 50's.

Crappy day of fishing produced 2 pb's My son's biggest walleye at a fat 26" didn't get a weight on her but I'm confident she went at least 6 pounds, and a 36" pike that weighed in at 13lbs.
