 It was a little breezy and cold for boating, so I walked to the mud flats. Only got stuck in quicksand once, picked up four or five fish.

Your commitment to white bass is awesome. Walking thru mud and quicksand for a fish most people malign ...nice work sir. Where there's a will there's a way.

Had a laugh about this yesterday. I texted a buddy whose a crappieholic who also happens to be a sheriff deputy about where my best bet for a 15+in crappie was around here. He said off handedly does this crappie need to be obtained legally- meaning possible trespass involved? I said of course........especially since I'm talking to you! He responds: well bud your on your own!

Your buddy is right. I’m still lucky to fish in private 400 acres lake. The past two-three years I see more and more ppl crappie fishing to keep. They keep everything big and small and often time over limit. Being in private lake we don’t have waders to check very often.

I still remembered the day, the guy yell at me “is that a crappie” i released him as quick as possible but still the guy saw it. After that I see the whole family too often on spot.
I stop fishing in day light just so that they don’t know or see where and when I pull the big ones, they will figure it out though. I also stop posting much in local forum or Facebook since quite a bit of ppl in community know me even call me Mr. Crappie ????

Just to prolong these ppl, I lost ability to get a good picture of big slab in daylight and using all my casting gears. Now I don’t care if they keep bass but I will try as much as possible to preserve those big slab. I admit I do keep some each year but only 11-13” bigger and smaller get released no matter how much I want to eat them ????.

I hear that. I won't mow the lawn when it's too hot but have no issue putting a pair of wrangler cargo pants, a long sleeve shirt and my hip boots on and walk 2 miles of river chasing catfish. Just sweating to death and loving it.

I ran the high pressure hose on the cutting board prior to this photo just for @gimruis, unfortunately it didn’t change its appearance hahaha. Got rained on in my buddy’s boat but still acquired food. Bottom left is yellow bass

I'm doing my best to figure out the Crappie fishing on my new home lake.   The locals here ALL go somewhere else because there are very productive Crappie lakes nearby and this lake is extremely unreliable and tough to catch them on, but there are some big ones here.   This is the 5th that I've taken in the last 2 weeks that I'd call a "big 'un".

I'd take slow tough fishing if that was the payoff. Another great fish!

That's sort of how I feel as well.  There are places I can go to catch a bunch of them and I don't really pursue them to eat on this lake because you'd get frustrated easily, but if you were a person who was happy with far fewer fish in exchange for a few slobs, this place works fine.

I need to find that place up here.  My problem is the exact opposite.  Tons of 8-12 inch crappies, and nothing bigger.  I'd trade limit after limit of 10-12 inch crappies for one 15 incher.

Probably need to come down here, or more specifically northern MS:

Enid, Arkabutla, Granada and Sardis. You have a legitimate shot at a 

World Record, both black and white species.

Lots of 14-16 inch white crappie in the lakes here. One of the lakes I fish has a 12" minimum length limit to keep crappies, it use to be 14" and it wasn't hard to catch keepers. They're so dumb, even I can catch them too.

Nothing wrong with 12" Crappie !!  Of course a 14" is better !!

That basically turns the lake into nothing but a trophy caliber crappie water.  I am all for it.  But the meat hunters here would never go for it.  It would be total pitchforks.

Ive.never understood this about Minnesota. You guys have 14,000 lakes and are in the bottom half of the US for population density. On top of that they have really tightened the limits on fish. Yet I constantly hear people complaining about the size of the panfish. Either people are keeping and eating fish everyday or you have alot of anglers breaking the possession limit laws.

Combo of both of those. There's people lining the shore of Black Lake, North Arm channel, Maxwell Bay channel and the Narrows channel on Tonka all the time...some of them will keep anything they can get even a couple ounces of meat from. When it takes 10-15 fish to make a meal for 3 people...well, they're out there 2-3 times a week taking home a limit of sub-size gills and crappie, eating them that same night, then coming back for more.

 

There's also those who 'stock up' for a week, shuffling a bucket with a limit home, emptying it out, then coming right back the same day for 'another limit'.

Also, it simply takes longer for the fish to reach trophy or even “keeper” size here. They are living in a frozen box for 5 months every year so they don’t grow as quickly as they do further south.

 

Theres just not a lot of catch and release anglers when it comes to panfish (or walleye). As opposed to bass, which are mostly voluntarily released, and also have a closed season.

 

Northern pike populations are essentially in the same situation here. Too many small ones.
