I was able to take the kayak out for a few hours today. I thought I had set the hook on my PB bass so you can imagine my delight when it surfaced with its ugly face. It was a fun little battle on a Ned rig with a 6’ medium rod and Daiwa size 2000 reel.

Colder water means jerkbaits, neds, traps, and cranks, and that means multispecies days. This past weekend was no exception.

First fish of the day Sunday was a surprise big black crappie that smacked a 3/8oz flipping jig in a brushpile.

315652187-10222111329198507-152795564007

If I'd been keeping them, could have had a decent bag. Probably a dozen, all in the 12" range, mostly on a Jackall Rerange 110.

315581683-10222111330918550-901211637674

Also caught a few pig drum on a jerkbait and 1 on a micro jig, no pictures of those though. Caught 2 little wipers on the jerkbait, always a fun surprise.

Of course the fish to take the cake this weekend was the monster 17.74lb channel. I was fishing a Berkley Stunna 112 and never saw my line move, but when I went to twitch it, felt like my line had broke because there was no resistance at all. I cranked like crazy and leaned into a ton of weight. Obviously was not a bass and I expected a drawn out fight, but it was in the net in less than a minute. The even bigger shocker there, it was hooked in the top of the tail. Channel cats are notorious for slapping at lures, so I'm guessing this one slapped at my bait on the pause and the hooks caught it's tail, because I felt no resistance the jerks before my bait "disappeared", on me. Either way, a true beast of channel, my second over 17lbs in the last 2 years.

Been working at lot and fishing less than I would like, but was glad to sneak out and have the locals participate. Also caught a Bigmouth Sleeper which apparently is somewhat rare? Either way cool stuff.

Starting to catch big shiners again, which bodes well for the bass forage…and they put up a decent fight on an ultra lite!

Also , the bream are fired up !!

If I'm not chasing bass, there's a good chance I'm after crappie, especially this late in the year. We've been in the 30s (highs) for the past several days, but took advantage of some nice weather we had right before things went south this past weekend to get the boat out and chase after 'em. Located several nice groups sitting on top of a drop near a river channel bend in about 15'-18' of water and managed close to a hundred before calling it a day. Hoping for some more open water trips yet later this year if we can get a few warm spells that keep our waters open.

I'm not catching many bass on the Yumbrella, but the muskie are mauling it. Four today, 33"-33"-35"-40". Water's down to 49. Temps were in the mid 30's all day with W winds at 10-13 and light snow on and off. Only one other boat on the lake.

Yesterday I caught a snail on it. The strike was vicious. Nearly took the rod out of my hand.?

That’s awesome @T-Billy. How many have you caught this season? Gotta be in the double digits now.

The four today put me at 12 + put the wife on her PB 44 incher. I lost a fat mid 40's yesterday. I was drifting toward the bait as I was retrieving it, and the fish was coming at me when I swung. Just didn't get a good hookset. Couple big head shakes and it was off. I got a good look at it though. It hit about 10' from the boat about a foot and a half down.

I was gonna get the wife a replica done. Just out of curiosity, I went to the big auction site and typed in muskie mount. First auction on the list was a 44" VERY close in color to the fish she caught. Mount was really well done. Seemed like it was meant to be. I picked it up for half what a replica would have cost me and no wait. It arrived yesterday. She's tickled with it.

Fantastic. Does Ohio have a closed portion of muskie season or is it open all year? Ours closes in MN on December 1 and then doesn’t re-open until the first Saturday in June.

LOL. The machine is down for maintenance today. Two days of Alab..... Uh... Umbrella rigging has the tendonitis in my elbows on fire. Going deer hunting this morning.

LOL. Lots of 'em move shallow when the water's cold. My best day is 9 on, 7 in the boat. We have a local guide. I was talking to him last week, and he told me his best day was 14. I know another guy who caught 17 one February day vertical jigging a bait he makes that's basically an oversize Little George.

Speaking of braid, I actually got bit off on the rig two days ago. The fish smoked it from behind and knocked a bunch of slack in the line, when I caught up to it and swung...... whiff. I barely got any tension on the line and it was gone. I sure wasn't expecting to get get bit off throwing this thing. Not something I expect will happen often.

Nah. It's a seasonal thing for me. I collide with 'em when the water's cold mostly. I don't get many in summer. The Yumbrella rig has increased the number of collisions though, and greatly increased the percentage of bites that make it in the boat. I live 15 minutes from the best lake in OH for numbers, and 45 minutes from another good one. They're my two favorite lakes for bass too.

Killer post !

And I love "The Braided Wonder"

Certainly seems to fit, quite perfectly I might add.

Nicely Done

They will bite through braided line.  I can attest to that.  Didn't think they could either, until it happened.  Twice.

7 in the boat

I caught 7 this past season and considered it a really good total.  My personal record is 8 in a season.

I also went 16.5 years without ANY lol

Yeah they cut it easily. I was just surprised one got it in it's mouth on the rig

Population density is about one per acre on my #1 lake, and not far behind on #2.

That's an awesome day of muskie fishing. They're one of those fish that's really hard to catch until they decide to be in a biting mood, then it's like you can do no wrong. I wish I had them closer to me. It's a 3 hour drive to the lake I muskie fish at ?

If an ole dumb rip rap rock that can’t move can cut it, a musky sure can

We've also got lakes now that are infested with zebra mussels and they are very sharp.  Any sort of bottom contact presentation in a lake with them around is sure to cut through certain types of line.  I use Seaguar Blue Label to alleviate this problem.

Yep. I find braid to be plenty abrasion resistant, especially 832. Cut resistance is a different story. I've been cut off by rocks while fighting fish before, and musky teeth slice it like a hot knife through butter, but for me, the pros far outweigh the cons.

We hit a high of 59 today with light winds and plenty of sunshine. Took advantage of the weather and hit the local reservoir for less than 3 hours. Found the crappie schooled up and sitting on the edge of the river channel bank in 16-20 ft of water. Never left that one spot and landed 125 fish. Duplicate weather forecast for tomorrow - I might have to sneak back out again :cool7:
