Super User NYWayfarer Posted July 18, 2022 Super User Posted July 18, 2022 This Fallfish giant was bigger than the Smallmouth Bass I was catching that day. He swallowed a Senko. First Fallfish I ever caught on a weightless Senko rig. 14 Quote
The Bassman Posted July 20, 2022 Posted July 20, 2022 This bullhead must have been showing off to his buddies that he could be aggressive like the bass in the pond. Must not have realized that getting yanked out of the water was part of the deal. 9 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted July 23, 2022 Super User Posted July 23, 2022 First muskie of the season for this guy. My friend and I each caught one, 10 minutes apart. 17 Quote

The hook shank through their jaw sideways, bend around the side of their top jaw and point of the hook on the topside of their top jaw with the barb dug down into it. Seems like my Ned rig hooks fit their jaws pretty perfectly and they have a tough time letting go of those stretchy Z-man baits as it is. Quote
hokiehunter373 Posted July 26, 2022 Posted July 26, 2022 Gents - heading to Ocean Isle next week with some friends and doing an inland fishing day with a buddy. How much are you expected to tip? First time doing something like this. Thanks Quote

I found tubes work great for catching them in the river when it gets low in summer and they school up in pools. Like the Z-Man baits they have a hard time letting go of a tube, and as soon as you put pressure on them the roll several times and lasso their jaws shut around it. Slimy suckers are a handfull when you land them. 2 Quote

thediscochef Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 Stripers, Wipers, and Sandies, oh my! My love affair with lake whitney dam continues. I went down with one of my best buds on Thursday, we caught 8 stripers, 8 wipers, and three sandies total in the 45 minutes we had before the school moved into open water. A derby of sorts. Didn't matter what you threw, it was getting bit. I live for this right now. I've been trying to teach him to catch fish, he's been discouraged because conditions have been rough and it's been skunky at the local reservoirs. So I was determined to get him into a fish fight one way or another, this was the sure fire thing. We didn't catch much else after the sun came over the dam, just the one bright photo you see here. And it was 5 hours round trip of driving - but worth the time just to see the water boil with schooling bass. A golden hour indeed ?? 13 Quote
galyonj Posted August 1, 2022 Posted August 1, 2022 Caught my PB zucchini on Saturday while @TnRiver46 and I were out for a sesh. Couldn't get a weight on it cause it fell apart in my hands, but it was by far the biggest squash I've ever pulled out of the river. 1 14 Quote

Super User gim Posted August 6, 2022 Super User Posted August 6, 2022 I caught another small muskie this morning. #2 this season. It got some major air a couple times. 16 Quote
The Bassman Posted August 6, 2022 Posted August 6, 2022 Got a bonus forearm workout with this channel cat today. He hit a Rozante 77 and gave me a real run for the money. I cross paths with a few cats each season. Sorry for the close shot. I'm trying to keep from laying fish down now even though I really don't see the harm if the grass is green and reasonably cool. 14 Quote
hokiehunter373 Posted August 8, 2022 Posted August 8, 2022 Went on vacation last week and took a little inshore fishing trip with my buddy. Captain warned us that the fishing had been tough lately and the first 2 hours certainly were. Tiny nibbles eating bait and all we had to show for it was a skate at our first stop. The 2nd and 3rd spots were empty. At one of those spots I lost a 10ish pound sheepshead right at the boat. Didn't cut the line, didn't bend the hook, didn't do anything wrong, just popped off after a few minute fight. Real kick in the pants after how the morning had started. Headed to our 4th spot and it did not disappoint as we spent the rest of our time there. 5 mins after arriving I was hooked into a good black drum. About 23" and most importantly within the slot limit to bring home My buddy caught a couple smaller keepers and then the real fun began. Hooked into a big one that made several drag ripping runs. Took 10 or 15 minutes to get him to the boat. He was about 30" and over slot so back to the water he went after a few pics. Note the tail on him. That thing sure could provide some power. Bite slowed for a little while but we caught a few more keeper drum, a couple toadfish that went back, and a pigfish that we were able to keep. We got back on them shortly before we needed to leave and my buddy was able to get into a stud too. All-in-all we caught the 2 big ones, 6 keepers between 15 and 23 inches, 2 toadfish, the skate, and a pigfish. The drum were a ton of fun, especially the bigger ones, and they were delicious. The pigfish was on the smaller end but the meat was fantastic. We chose to go the blackening route for dinner for all 7 fish and man was it fantastic! I should have taken more pics of the finished product but these will have to do. 16 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 8, 2022 Global Moderator Posted August 8, 2022 Went and did something different this weekend, fished the river from my kayak and from an island I pedaled to. I started at the ramp with crawlers on the bottom trying to catch some bait for bigger catfish since I didn't bring any bait (dumb move). One of the rods started dancing immediately and I reeled in one of the smallest flatheads I've ever seen. I pedaled to a water outflow and started fishing a grub hoping for a white bass. Hooked a couple big fish that pulled off before landing a little 2-3 pound wiper. Not what I wanted to use for bait but completely legal and I needed something so it got kept to hopefully be turned into a big catfish. I had a bait rod out on the bottom that I tried to reel in because my kayak was drifting, but there was another little flathead on there. I broke off my grub so I tried a jig and crawler. I hooked a big fish that pulled hard and thought I saw a catfish, but it turned out to be about an 8lb grass carp. Pretty crazy to catch one like that, even crazier was I did it again the very next cast! Nothing else was happening there so I pedaled to the island I wanted to fish. Wasn't long before I had my first run and landed a nice blue cat. I was literally releasing this fish after this picture when another reel took off and I beached a big channel cat. Then the turtles showed up. My rods were dancing nonstop with these stupid things. I did manage to catch a couple more decent channel catfish but it was 100* outside and my phone was so hot the camera wouldn't open. I stopped at the outflow on the way back in and made a few cast with a grub. I hooked another big fish and thought it was going to be a catfish or big wiper, turned out to be a common carp that inhaled my grub! 15 Quote
