Those look like tilapia; not bluegill.

They are all copperhead bluegills , except the second to last one , which is a shellcracker.

I have never caught a tilapia. They arent very common around here, although I know 1 pond that’s full of them. They never would bite anything ...

There arent any that I know of in my home lake.

Got ya, thanks for the education.  We don’t have either of them here in NE.

Shellcrackers go by red ear sunfish outside of the south. I would have thought there were some in Nebraska...

By the way, I love your state. My oldest son was stationed at Omaha for close to 10 years...Never did any fishing there though.

I finally made it back to a Walleye lake for a night sesh with The Mad Walleye Lipper. A mat of grass was present at the shore line that extended out about 3 feet in zero to eight inches of water. From a distance I heard a commotion that looked like geese fighting near the shore. I worked my way down about 1000ft to find fish nearly beaching themselves in the slop. As I got closer I watched big wakes coming in, and then huge tail slaps through the matted grass right against the bank. I got a bunch of short strikes throwing small swimmers right along the mat, but they wouldn't commit. Tied on some wakes and glides, then began nailing them. No bigs, but pretty cool.

My new PB pumpkinseed! My hands are big, and I could barely get my hands around him! I’m guessing he was over a pound. I’ve also been catching some fat little Bass and a couple of other panfish.

I guess a catfish will eat a big crank down wake bait. Nothing special for me last night, but my buddy got this one on a Toxic Baits WAD3. Fat little kitty got both trebles trying to eat it. Cool!

That's a big fish.  I'd be scared to let it in the boat.

SWMBO and I ran up the river on Saturday evening to see what we could get into.

Most of you reading this will probably just nod and say "Yeah, you got learnt," but two things stood out to me as a nascent boater:

  1. I should have checked the dam schedule before we left. Douglas Dam, which feeds the river we were on, was apparently wide open to clear water out of that impoundment after the few days of rain we had here last week. Because the water we were trying to fish was moving. I spent more time dancing on the trolling motor in an effort to keep the stern behind us than I did fishing.
  2. I should've just motored across to the inside bend and fished the slower water. We would've avoided all that hectic mess, and probably caught more fish.

Nonetheless, and no thanks to me, I'm pleased to report that some striper candy was caught, the big motor mostly behaved, and we got the boat back on the trailer without breaking anything this time.

I don’t live down there, but I looked it up and I think it is a skipjack herring.

That's a skipjack herring, and they are dope, aggressive little fish. They're all over the place here, and they're a hoot to catch because they just lose their minds. I think the state record is 4lbs or so, and that fish was caught on Watt's Bar, down the river a ways from where we usually fish. Folks call them Tennessee tarpon.

They'll hit...just about anything, I reckon. I've had them knock spooks way up in the air, caught them on lipless, little swimbaits, panfish gear. SWMBO caught one in the same spot on an ultralight, and it gave her everything she could handle.

Striped bass just love them. If you're fishing with @TnRiver46 and he catches one, be ready to watch him drag it around behind the boat for the rest of the day. ?

I think so, but I'm probably not a great judge because I'm happy to catch any fish. lol

There's a few that get up around this way. A friend of mine had the Missouri state record for a minute.

Caught a pretty big bluegill yesterday on an XCalibur Zell Pop. Peeled some drag and made a couple strong runs.

I agree. They are pretty fun to catch, but it can get interesting trying to get a hook out of those slippery jokers.

I've actually gone out with only ultra-light gear with intentions of catching panfish.  The fight is ON!
