M Bruns Posted June 16, 2020 Posted June 16, 2020 A few of the "other species" that I caught this weekend. All came from the river but the crappie. The stripers bit on jig/grubs and crankbaits (biggest was 6.5 lbs). Caught two catfish on a spinnerbait which was a first (Had a 15-20 lb channel cat on a ned rig but wrapped me up in a submerged tree and got off). Crappie came from the ned. And finally, my new pb for a pike by far, caught on a micro chatterbait with a ned bug trailer. He was 30.5 inches! 8 Quote

I say Redbreast Sunfish but some folks think it’s a Longear Sunfish. I don’t know the Longear’s range and if they are in Northern NY Other than the Great Lakes  http:// 3 Quote

I'm gonna have a very interesting late day Friday into Friday night will have my grandsons on the lake. The one is a fishing machine. If he gets one on it's to the boat and the line is right back out immediatly. He's like a MLF'r. I don't really get much fishing in when I'm out. I'm fine with that. Our time out is about them. More of a guide and try to get them in some good areas. I'd like them to get a 5 lb'r. But I'll be prepared for 100 various panfish.  2 Quote

The one characteristic of the redbreast that was helping me was the red fin tips but I don’t guess yours has that @NYWayfarer, I just looked up habitat range of each and you may be outside of longear range but lots of redbreast in your area ^source cited 1 1 Quote

That would be a massive longear sunfish also, most are less than 6". This is my oldest with an adult Longear in his 5 year old hands.  Did a lot of creek fishing with the boys this weekend to avoid the crowds. Took Finn by himself Wednesday so we could have some 1 on 1 time. Had a blast catching all kinds of fish including his first ever flathead catfish!  Friday I took both of them with the intention of taking the johnboat out to a creek that has a little ramp but the gate was locked for some reason. We circled back and bank fished another spot for 1.5 hours before it good real hot and again caught several species and Lake finally got his gar. The boy has wanted to catch one for well over a year now and we finally made it happen with a little Mepps spinner.  11 Quote

The smallest was the biggest deal in this case because I caught it out of a tributary to the Kansas River, making it a naturally produced sauger from the Kansas River, an extremely rare fish. 9 Quote

If that was me I would have called my boss and said I know you saw me 20 minutes ago and I seemed fine but I just developed a bad case of explosive diarrhea and can't come back.
