Pkfish49 Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 Yellow Perch. We grow our Panfish big in New York State! I caught it while trolling with a Rebel Crickhopper. 9 Quote
Pkfish49 Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 I caught two of the Pickerel that I primarily target. The smaller one just met the New York State 15 inch minimum. The other was just under 16.5 inches. I caught the little one with a worm and bobber. The big one was caught while I was trolling with a Rebel Crickhopper. This was a fun catch. I had let out a lot of line (at least 75 feet) and the fish put up a big fight. 3 Quote
Pkfish49 Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 I gave up trying to get a proper picture with the fish parallel to the measuring tape. It was too jumpy. 4 Quote
Pkfish49 Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 Pumpkinseed Sunfish next to the Pickerel. That’s all the fish for a while. Back to work unfortunately. Appreciate the opportunity to share. 3 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted May 5, 2020 Global Moderator Posted May 5, 2020 First hammer handle of the year for Mr. 6poundbass. He’s breaking in his first baitcaster quickly. 7 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 6, 2020 Super User Posted May 6, 2020 My rusty baitcaster still works. Haven’t use them for crappie for awhile, spoiled with 2 new spinning rod I guess. Say what you want but no matter what, nothing beat baitcaster on cast N reel crappie jig. I can cast easier, faster and more accurate. Caught about 10 or so until last light nothing big just a few 12 inchers. 5 Quote
Finessegenics Posted May 6, 2020 Posted May 6, 2020 I finally got my first fish of 2020 last friday...which might sound crazy unless you're a northern guy. Caught a few eater sized walleye using a perch pattern swim jig and trailer. All were caught and released. It felt amazing to have a bent rod. 5 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 10, 2020 Super User Posted May 10, 2020 First Mohawk crappie, didn’t know we have blacknose crappie in our lake. cool! 3 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 11, 2020 Global Moderator Posted May 11, 2020 Caught a bunch of different kinds of fish this weekend, only took a picture of a couple of my "other" fish though. Not pictured were green sunfish, white bass, channel cat, and sauger. Caught dozens of crappie on everything I fished from a Ned rig to a jerkbait, drop shot, 1/2oz spinnerbait and a tube jig. Couldn't resist trying to sight fish a big ugly drum on a Ned rig either. They're too easy sometimes and not so heartbreaking when you know for sure what you've got. 5 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 11, 2020 Super User Posted May 11, 2020 Im not a BFS guy, just one that fall in love with UL fishing and crappie action. I’m quitting and selling on these locally. 4 Quote

For the past two year, I hardly buy anything gears for bass but got like 5 baitcaster for crappie and 2 spinning setup. Even thinking of getting another Shimano Soare 500 or 1000 for xtra spinning rod I have. I might even trade my bantam for Daiwa px68 soon too. That how much I enjoy UL fishing. 2 Quote

Open water and clean structure facilitate that style well. I fish midwest retention ponds so vegetation limits my options during warmer months. Enjoy! Quote
M Bruns Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 After the winter before last, the private farm pond close to my house had a big fish kill. It used to be FULL of giant bull bluegills. I could usually catch a few over a pound most times out which is rare in the Midwest. Anyway, since the fish kill I've been looking for another pond with decent gills and I finally found it. They had an average length of 8 inches and pretty good girth. Picture of the glory days of the farm pond for comparison 5 Quote

Dorado Posted May 14, 2020 Posted May 14, 2020 Last night, fishing shallow waters in urban ponds. Cut mackerel gets it done! 5 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted May 14, 2020 Global Moderator Posted May 14, 2020 Got this one last night jigging a tiny spoon. No takers on cut bait 8 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted May 15, 2020 Super User Posted May 15, 2020 Going after bluegill this morning. Not bad but not good only caught 8 bluegill and 1.5lb bass on Majorcraft Speedstyle S63UL. I still have to learn how to catch them more effectively. What type of plastic best for bluegill? I only have a few of 1-1.5” plastics, trout magnet, trout slayer, tube. Should I use bobbers on just drag along bottom? 8 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted May 15, 2020 Super User Posted May 15, 2020 One of two pike I caught this morning - this is the little one, the vid for the larger one 'blipped' so couldn't get a screenshot. This one was a 1.83# hammer-handle. 8 Quote

My favorite panfish soft plastic is an 1” Gulp Minnow on a small size 8 mosquito hook or trout magnet jig head under a bobber. Deadly!!!! 1 Quote

Fly-fishing works great for them too 1 Quote

Where I fish is a drop off, 30’ out could be 10-15’ deep Quote

Congratulations Social, There's something about bluegill sunfish that light my fire! My best day with bluegills was in Greenwood Lake, NY on "Beetle Spins". Nevertheless, I had a multitude of fouled casts that day due to the Beetle Spin's looped-wire eye. Today, I'd sooner recommend an R-bend spinner like the 1/24 oz Rooster Tail. Roger 1 Quote

That was 10 years ago. I might have to try that or 1/16oz marabou roadrunner. 1 Quote
