Ogandrews Posted April 5, 2020 Posted April 5, 2020 Got a new pb brow trout a couple weeks ago at 24”. This was at a local pond about 3 blocks from my house. There was about 20 ft of it that didn’t have ice in it and this guy hit a small x rap about 10ft from shore. Got to break in my new g loomis e6x 7’1” m spinning rod with a nasci, what an awesome setup. Talked to a dnr officer right after that and he told me they only stocked them 12-15” so this guy was in there for awhile. Hell of a fight 9 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted April 8, 2020 Global Moderator Posted April 8, 2020 Corona boredom: experimenting with different lures. Since I’m not fishing with my buddies and since there’s 500 billion white bass right near my house, I figured I would try some stuff. I am beyond useless with a spinnerbait and the wind was whitecapping with sun so I thought it would be a great time to attempt catching a black bass with it. Yet another fail but white bass were railroading it. So then I caught them vertical jigging a chartreuse grub, some of these were big 2 lb males fighting crazy hard. Then I caught some with a jerkbait, then some jigging a new spoon I found at academy a long time ago and forgot I had. I also got a graphite splinter from a rod, that was a first. Hard to get those out! My golfing buddy always warned me of those, he said the flagstick could get you 6 Quote
hawgenvy Posted April 10, 2020 Posted April 10, 2020 Trying to get into something a bit different by targeting bullseye snakehead, which are now quite common in Palm Beach County, FL. They are tough and toothy critters and attack like monsters when they commit, and then it's quite a wild and powerful fight if they are big guys -- just a lot of fun. And great eating, too -- though I am reluctant to eat anything from our local residential and golf course ponds. BTW, prowling the banks for bass and snakehead has been a godsend during these coronavirus epidemic days. Gets me out of the house to do something I enjoy without violating human distancing requirements. It's a sanity promoter. 10 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted April 17, 2020 Super User Posted April 17, 2020 Stock up for my quarantine day, lol. I think I’m getting bad, enjoy catching and filleting crappie lol. Caught about 25 last night a bunch of 10” biggest went 14” (released). I decided to keep some 11-12” for my wife. 7 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted April 18, 2020 Global Moderator Posted April 18, 2020 Caught a white bass before I launched in an eddy that is normally dry land. The river had to be flowing over 30,000 cfs, big logs were floating by fast. I broke a rod On the fish but it was a $20 rod from at least 3-4 years ago and I was trying to drag it onto land . 4 Quote

Must be contagious. Caught some bream today. Doesn’t look like many, but I’m adding them to the collection! I threw back at least 15 though that didn’t measure up. 4 Quote
FishDewd Posted April 18, 2020 Posted April 18, 2020 Hi all, I haven't been on in a while, nor have I fished much lately... went out to family pond today trying to catch some lovely frying catfish... unfortunately the bite was slow. I did however, catch something unexpected.... a 10-12 lb Smallmouth Buffalo! Not what I wanted to see in our pond, but they don't seem to be doing much other than keeping the pond clean luckily... it bit on a piece of shrimp on 3/0 circle hook. I didn't snag it, the thing legit ate it and got hooked in the mouth. Felt like nothing bringing it in until it got about 6' from the bank, freaked out, and started using it's power to take some drag... I barely managed to get it on shore, having been using 10' mono on a medium power spinning rod I use for float fishing a lot. Hook actually ripped from the lips as I tried to shore it, but thankfully since it was so worn out, it just floating there on it's side and I was able to grab it by the gills and haul it onto land. It's not going back in. I gave it to the neighbor who is going to smoke and eat it. 3 Quote

They will eat a variety of things off the bottom, not too different from a standard carp. Shrimp is probably a little out of the ordinary, but not terribly surprising. Quote

Super User JustJames Posted April 20, 2020 Super User Posted April 20, 2020 I’m gonna call myself Catfish_fishing_Socal. Yesterday while trying new to me Crappie rod (thanks Scott for this wonderful Shimano Crucial ML 1/16-1/4oz), I caught another catfish on crappie tube. This is the fourth catfish in a month I caught while crappie fishing. It was fun but my Sahara 750 got beat up pretty bad (2 of them pushing 7lb). This morning again while Nedrig for some bass with trimmed Roboworm Nedworm, catfish decided to have fun with my ultra finesse setup. It Is fun but enough is enough, I hate touching catfish slime. 2 1 Quote

You'd hate fishing here. I've caught 3 dozen of them in a trip on lures before. The state stocks so many channel cats in very lake, it's insane. Fun to catch, but frustrating when you're not targeting them. 2 Quote
Ogandrews Posted April 22, 2020 Posted April 22, 2020 Went out trout fishing today in a small river that has a bunch of trout streams that dump into it. Usually this year I get some really big browns in the river itself. I went out and fished one of my favorite holes on that stretch of the river and instead of catching trout like I expected I got the two biggest walleye of my life. First was 26 and the second was 27. Both were caught snapping a bucktail jig off bottom. Fought so well in the current. It’s out of season here in Minnesota until May 9th but if you catch something on accident you can take pictures. I have never caught and never even heard of anyone catching a walleye out of this river before, huge surprise to me. 26” 27” 8 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted April 22, 2020 Super User Posted April 22, 2020 Went to the local reservoir today because I figured the crappie would be moving shallow into the rocks. Only managed a handful, but did catch this tank. A little over 16" long, but as big around as a dinner plate and really thick. Managed a 5lb+ largemouth as well. Lot of fun on my crappie rod. Really odd to see one that size out of this lake too. My stepdad said I should have taken to the marina to see if it's a lake record lol 6 Quote

You can get back at the catfish for sliming you with some yellow cornmeal and hot Wesson oil 4 Quote
Ogandrews Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 Made a trip out to the Mississippi River backwaters today and had a 30+ fish day between largemouth, pike, and my first ever bowfin. I had no idea how hard a bowfin fought, what an awesome fish I’ll definitely be targeting them more. Nothing huge, my friend got the only pike over 30” but it was fun to get out and stick some fish. The biggest pike I got was actually on a frog which is pretty awesome considering the water was still in the 50’s 7 Quote
hawgenvy Posted April 27, 2020 Posted April 27, 2020 I am relatively new to bullseye snakehead fishing, and am still trying to figure out the basics. These fish are not always in the mood to eat, and spook easily. I managed to nail this feisty 5.35 on a GameChanger Eeliminator, with a belly weighted 4-0 swimbait hook. This is a lure I don't use often, but thought it would be a good snakehead attractant, being weedless and with good action on a slow retrieve. Tonight the Eeliminator came through, once, anyway. SH are always surprisingly powerful. After hoisting him to the grass, I couldn't get the mouth open to weigh the guy (there may be a trick to that), so I just weighed him from the hook shank. Photos by my son, Michael. 7 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 29, 2020 Global Moderator Posted April 29, 2020 Went for a couple hours after work this morning and hit a couple spots I couldn't hardly get a bait past the crappie they were so thick. The boys had their suits on and were looking nice. I caught at least 2 dozen off one little spot and the visible disgust on the face of another nearby boater was pretty comical as I tossed back crappie after crappie. 5 Quote
Super User JustJames Posted April 29, 2020 Super User Posted April 29, 2020 Nice @Bluebasser86i wish I could find crappie like that. I think I’ve been fishing for crappie more than bass nowadays. Those crappie already done spawning in my lake so now it waiting game. last night caught about 15 in about hour or so most of them 12”, tonight only got 2. Quote
hawgenvy Posted April 30, 2020 Posted April 30, 2020 Nailed another nice bullseye snakehead tonight from the bank. This guy was seen going into a recess deep under the grass bank. I dangled a horny toad at the entrance to his or her lair, where he (or she) was perhaps guarding a clutch of eggs or fry. The fish poked its head out a bit and snapped repeatedly at the bait to chase it away or maim it, and eventually, and probably accidentally, caught itself on the hook and was foisted aloft, wiggling furiously. The beast eventually settled down and was released after a couple of photos. It is always a learning experience for me to catch these creatures, as they are new for me. They spook easily, and I've noticed that when they flee they stir up silt from the bottom to create an impressive cloud of dust, probably a defensive measure to confuse any pursuer. 4 Quote
