jr231 Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 I'm pretty sure it's a channel. They get dark in color. Here is someone else's channel catfish I found as soon as I googled black channel cat. It's not a blue. Look at the anal fin. 85 % sure it's a channel. @Bunnielab it's a Berkley cherrywood 6 foot MH. Perfect for bank fishing . And only 25 bucks. For the money it's above and beyond 2 Quote
Some tissues Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 Lol ? bullhead, I fish for a lot of species that's a channel. 1 Quote
lonnie g Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 I was going to say bull heads usually channels have white bellies with speckals. the bullheads we use to catch were usually black in color. but I am no expert. bet it was a fun fight tho! Quote
jr231 Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 It's belly was all white... The owner of the pond told me his brother stocked channels in there.. so I just assumed. It's not a blue or a flathead that's for sure. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 20, 2017 Global Moderator Posted May 20, 2017 That's a big male channel. They turn nearly black and their heads swell up during spawning time. Channels only have spots as juveniles, they disappear once they become adults. Blues anal fins are very straight and unmistakable. 4 Quote

lonnie g Posted May 20, 2017 Posted May 20, 2017 cool! learn something every day. told you I was no expert. just remember what my dad called them when I was a young boy. 2 minutes ago, slonezp said: I thought bullheads were brown with whitish yellowish bellies flat heads or mountain boys might say mud cat. that's on the brown ones with huge heads 1 Quote

Easiest way to tell a bullhead is their head is rounded like a channel, and their tail is rounded like a flathead. 3 Quote

You are most likely right, but that cat has a lot of head about 1/3 of his body 1 Quote

frosty Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Accidentally caught 5 or 6 bluegill on a yo-zuri jerkbait. I was quite impressed with their grit and determination 10 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 23, 2017 Global Moderator Posted May 23, 2017 It's that time of year when everyone is up shallow and hungry. In addition to largemouth and smallmouth this past week I've caught; warmouth, green sunfish, crappie, walleye, white bass, drum, channel catfish, flathead catfish, and trout. A finesse or micro jig fooled most of them. A couple of my favorite ones, I have a soft spot for flatheads, even tiny ones. I caught 3 walleye on Thursday, this one being the largest at 20-22 inches (board only goes to 18 so I didn't bother measuring). My oldest also caught a monster crappie from our neighbors pond on a wacky rigged 5" stickworm. It looks big in the picture, but it was even bigger in person, 15-16 inches by the mark on rod he was using. The 5" bait just about fit in it's mouth without having to be bent. 13 Quote
Attila Posted May 25, 2017 Posted May 25, 2017 Some awesome photos being posted here, glad everyone is having a great spring and catching a lot of fish! 1 Quote
HeavyTwenty Posted May 28, 2017 Posted May 28, 2017 23.5" red (PB so far) 21" with vegetation (circled in red) growing out of his side? Looked like its been there for a while because the flesh healed up around it. Manatee came and spooked me, and then spooked the reds I was sight fishing... Also ran into dolphins the last two times I've been out. They came within 20 feet of the kayak. 9 Quote
