DBL000006 Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Okay guys, i have a Reel i'll be Spooling Braid on. I need to know how much Backing Line to put on. I'm spooling the whole Spool of Braid. My Reel holds 145 Yards of 12LB Mono. I'm spooling 50LB Braid of 110 Yards. How much backing line, so the full Spool of Braid can fit? Quote
Fishing03xx Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 use the search tool on the top right lots of threads about this Quote
tbone1993 Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 Just use electrical tape on the spool. If you don't do that just cover the spool completely in one or two wraps it doesn't. 1 Quote

Look up the line diameter of the 50 braid and the 12 mono and apply a little arithmetic. For example, if you look up Power Pro Spectra 50 lb braid on the TW site, it says it has the same diameter as 12 lb mono. Therefore, you would need to first put on 145-110 = 35 yards of 12 lb mono as backing on the reel so that your 110 yards of Power Pro Spectra braid will fill the spool to capacity. How many rotations of your spool of mono equal 35 yards? Measure out how many rotations make one yard and multiply by 35. If its a small diameter spool, compensate by adding 5-10 more yards of mono because the spool will get smaller as line is rolled off. 1 Quote

Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted February 7, 2016 Super User Posted February 7, 2016 I would put the braid on first if space is left connect the mono fill the spool the rest of the way with mono you now know how much mono backing is needed take both off put mono back on first connect braid put rest of braid on spool is full might take 10 minutes 3 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 WOW! 110yards of braid. That is a football field long of 330 feet. I usually spool on no more than 40 yards and it is there for ever it seems. As suggested above, just do the math for the amount of backing needed. Quote

Thanks for addressing this, I wondered how much main line was really needed. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 7, 2016 Super User Posted February 7, 2016 I don't like feeling a knot. My suggestion is 2X maximum casting distance and a little extra! That's about 80 yards. Quote
DBL000006 Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 No, i made a mistake of wanting to put 110 Yards of Braid on. I want 55 Yards on. I'll be throwing Frogs and Flipping with this Reel of Braid. I'll try and put 50-60 Yards of Mono Line on. That'll be close so i can put 60 or so Braid Line on the Spool. Quote

bigturtle Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I fully spool my reels with braid. old braid on the bottom, new braid on top. I use a few SV spools from Daiwa, and their line capacity is slightly lower that most US spools. I fish a lot of pike and salmon with my reels so i need the extra line. If you are onyl bass fishing, I think 60 yards on braid is more than enough. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Invest in a line counter that clips to your rod. I think they are around $20 at BPS. I could not live without mine. Just reverse it on the rod for spooling on your reel. They measure feet and take the guess work out of spooling. Quote
Molay1292 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 I can tell you exactly how much backing you need if you provide some information about your reel and lines that you plan to use. 1.) How much line does your spool hold, for example 12/120 10/140 should be able to find easily. 2.) The dia. of the line you want to use for backing 3.) The dia. of the line you want to use as a main line, and how much main line you want to use. Provide me this information and I will give you numbers. Quote

I'm putting Braid on a Abu Garcia Orra SX Bait Caster.. The Reel holds 12# of 145 Yards. My Backing Line is 12# Test.. The Line Diameter is, .014 in the 12# Test. I'll be Spooling 50 LB Power Pro Braid.. Quote
Molay1292 Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Yours is an easy one to figure because of the spool size, and the size of lines you have chosen. All you need to do is figure how many yards of main line you want to use and subtract it from the amount the spool will hold. The remainder is the amount of backing you need. It gets more complicated when you use lines of different dia. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 10, 2016 Super User Posted February 10, 2016 Use Fins PRT 50 lb braid, 150 yd spool and not worry about filler line. Tom Quote
Xyndifor Posted February 16, 2016 Posted February 16, 2016 I usually spool about half of my reel with cheap mono and then put on the braid so about 50 to 60 yards or so of 30 lb braid. Quote
