Hi guys i just got into pouring my own soft plastics.  I have a couple aluminum molds i have seen a lot of videos on making molds out of plaster of paris.  I wanted to make a 3 inch and maybe a 4 inch worm mold.  My question is since most of the bait companies have these worms is it legal for me to use them to make the mold?  I know things like horny toads are patented just cant  find anything on worm molds or fluke style baits.  Thanks

You can make your own baits on anything that's out there for your own personal use. However you cannot sell them.

Tim I make a lot of my own molds.  I use Bondo and silicone.  I've never used POP as I am pretty careless and clumsy.

If you are wanting stick molds there have been some on sale at www.tackleunderground.com and Bears baits.  Look in the for sale sections.

Also check out Lurecraft and Bait Junkies.  They have lots of molds.

My understanding from reading tackleunderground discussions is that you can sell baits that are not patented as long as it does not infringe on the copyright.

@Tim12 You can design your own baits and make a Plaster Mold of them i do that a ton. all you need is super sculpey, plaster of paris, and an oven. Make Your masters out of super sculpey then bake. then get another glob of sculpey and press the baked master into it then pull it out to make a cavity. Then Bake. Pour between 2-5 baits in the sculpey mold then make a plaster mold. then i coat the plaster mold cavities with Lundmark Acrylic Floor wax to harden them and give the finished baits a shine.

Why can't you sell them?

It is illegal and unethical to take someone else's bait, copy it and sell it for profit. You can copy and give them away, but you cannot profit on someone else's design. Why not make your own design and sell it. How would you like if you came up with a great money making design, and everyone started copying it and ripping you off? Just some food for thought.

Lurecraft made some silicone molds of the paca craw and paca chunk back in 06-07. Netbait filed a lawsuit since they have a patent on those baits, they won and LC had to stop making the molds. Netbait also sent letters to EVERY person they could find selling baits from those molds saying they needed to stop making those baits for themselves or anyone else or they would file a lawsuit for patent infringement.

Actually a patented bait can not be used by anyone. Even yourself.

I think there is a clause that you can make whatever you want for personal use?
