  Friend and coworker keeps a picture of his last contest were he just beat Dave by one spot.  But Dave was only about twelve at the time.              Seems like a lot of the icons of BMX have passed away lately  Brethrupt   Sewell, Bennet and many more.  Sad  RIP.

That's so sad. My son and I were bummed to hear this. My son used to think he was the coolest kid on the block back when he used to ride and board. We watched tons of his training vids in hopes to learn to ride like him.

Man I still remember playing Dave Mirra freestyle BMX with my cousin on the PS1.

Sucks what happened, but thats life I guess.

The wife will move on, but those kids my god they will carry this with them for the rest of their lives. I shudder to think about and consider the negative impact this will have upon their lives.

How could he do this to them??? If you love your kids be there for them! They need their father! So sad.

Yup. My dad's dad killed himself when my dad was 16. It haunts him to this day (47 now). In some ways it has made him a terrific father, in others... not so much. Terrible thing for sure.

Too many people do not share their problems with others and carry them around while putting on a happy face.

You never know what is going on in someone's mind, home, work or relationships.

As you go through life you will encounter other unnecessary losses. Some you will have an inkling that there is a problem while you will have no idea about the majority.

Everyone thought Robin Williams was a success; had money; a beautiful wife; a great home; movie and TV contracts; all of which we would love to have. He had a serious disease that we did not know about which was a heavy cross to bear for him.

Even when things are not going as you wish there is no reason to take your life. There are too many people and services out there to help you through the tough times.

So sorry for his loss. So unnecessary.

agree, but really makes me wonder how much the science and medicine will change once they start to acknowledge the head trauma is a legitimate issue....

There's only so much anyone can do for someone who chooses to play a sport where head collisions occur as part of the sport or as a result of accidents that commonly occur as a result of the nature of that sport such as football or x-games, extreme sports. It is a tragedy what happened to him as well as others who have suffered similar fates. I support anything that can be implemented with advanced equipment where safety can be increased and head trauma can potentially be avoided or decreased but let's face it folks, people today are so much quicker to blame this or that and now everything is so regulated...kids in football...now I see they're talking about how kids are hurting their arms in baseball with pitching and "throwing themselves out of the game".  Where are we going folks? Seriously?  Sports are hard on your body!! They always have been and always be. If one chooses to be a part of it let them make their own decisions and let them deal with the consequences of those decisions. Isn't that part of freedom in this country?  Again, I'm all for any safety advances that don't decrease the quality of any sport or change it from what it is and always been. If you don't want your kids to get hurt that's completely understandable , don't let them play...instead parents want to make the sport bend and change because "it's not fair" to have their child sit out of it so they must change it to fit their expectations. Try chess.

stkbassn don't bring reason and any sort of common sense to this topic or world. Your going to totally screw up this twisted way that has become such a standard to appease.  Next thing you know they will blame the Wilson glove company for the pitchers arm getting messed up. Its about that crazy now. 

Indeed it was sad about Dave but it is sad about the how ever many it was before him as well. R.I.P. 

Hopefully technology can make better helmets better equipment but until then as always there are risks when doing things that beat on your body. Don't like it don't play that simple. But if you elect to participate don't start crying after the fact. Everyone that cares to know, knows now the potential consequences. So its game on! or go play chess and cry about that.

you must have misread or misinterpreted my comment....  i said nothing of changing the game, nor anything regarding freedom.  what i'm saying is those advanced equipment implementations you speak of cannot and will not happen when an entity such as the NFL coerces the studies in a way that manipulates the facts and avoids the medical issue.

I am pretty sure we are past that. It has kinda got out past any control of the NFL that these medical things can and do exist.  I believe it was earlier this year the NFL even admitted as much to the media. Its no secret any more.

Yeah man, I apologize.  I don't think you're wrong at all. Head Trauma is a real problem that exists beyond the initial superficial injury or incident. I am all for anything that can prevent or decrease these unfortunate incidents that can ultimately lead to serious, lifelong problems. Families are always a casualty of these events and it is sad to see.
