ranger7717 Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 i bought my first full sized bass boat last summer . it's an 82 ranger 375v that is in mint shape with lots of uprades including a full front deck with lockers...it's got an 86 blackmax 135 that has oil injection. i'm little worried about this system because of all the comments i've seen about the oil pump gear stripping because it's made of plastic and it's inside the motor.... the common opinion is to block the system and premix, but i don't really want to premix....to make a long story even longer, i'm thinking of putting an after market electric pump in and so far i've seen one by sei ( marine solutions ?) for 300 dollars....any thoughts? Super User webertime Posted February 4, 2016 Super User Posted February 4, 2016 Premix... ~$30 in parts. I have an 88 Black Max 150 and will be doing the premix conversion soon. The motor is simply not worth the $300 PLUS labor. 1 Quote
ranger7717 Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 i was gonna do the labor myself...new to outboards, but i'm pretty handy with tools and i research the hell out of everything...how do you go about your premix - seems like a pain, especially when you're on the fly Quote
Ski213 Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 I don't have the injection anymore but there are times I wish I did. The premixing is a slight inconvenience. What has worked ok for me on the fly is having a couple bottles that I marked with a sharpie at a point where it's the correct amount of oil for five gallons. If I'm doing more than ten gallons I use a measuring cup that I keep in the truck box. Quote
ranger7717 Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 I was thinking of doing something like that.....I'll just have to pay attention to how much gas goes in and do the math on odd amounts...maybe have marks for each gallon....the guy I bought the boat from said the injection always worked good, but I'm scared to rely on it Quote

My injection was OMC vro. I know nothing about your setup. As I now understand it vro got blamed for a lot of failures that it wasn't responsible for. My pump was 14 yrs old when it failed and it failed on the fuel side. Just do a lot of homework on your setup if you haven't already. The one benefit of premix is that you know she's getting oil. ranger7717 Posted February 5, 2016 Author Posted February 5, 2016 knowing the oil is there is comforting - so i can focus on fishing. i've seen where the black max has a plastic gear inside the motor to drive the pump...that's the scary part - if the motor gets hot, that gear can strip easy, and you have to take the motor apart to upgrade with a new gear, which a shop will charge over $1200 for according to forums...what i really was looking for is if anyone here knows about after market electric pumps and their reliability. i'm willing to put one on myself for $300 ,if i can count on it working..to me, the cost is worth it. i'm going to premix until i know - but i have 2 months to get it done..do you just dump the oil into the gas and let it splash around on the way to the lake? Ski213 Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 Unfortunately I can't give any advice on the pump. As far as premix I usually go oil first then gas on top. Don't know if it makes any difference but I feel better about it. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 8, 2016 Super User Posted February 8, 2016 I don't know much about the Mercury veriblend system ( I think that's what it's called). I can say that premixing isn't that big of a deal. It's a toss up on if you want to remove it though. On one had it's been going strong since 84 so if it hasn't died yet it'll keep on trucking. On the other side that plastic gear has been going since 84 and there's a chance it could fail. If you do remove it, go to walmart and pick up a marked premix bottle. They are less than $5 and all you do is fill it up with oil to the line of the amount of gallons you are going to add and then dump it in the tank before adding gas. It'll get you close enough and if you need to add more when filling up you can pour the rest in after. Having the oil res is nicer, but it's not nicer when you need to rebuild your motor because of it. 1 Quote
Cmiller Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 All of the small outboards I have owned have been premix and it has never been an issue. I recently bought a ranger of the same era as you and plan on deleting the oil injection. I have a mixing bottle and plan on keeping it as well as a gallon of oil in a storage compartment 2 Quote
