Rbm18 Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I am looking to buy a square bill rod for mostly 1.5 crankbaits and some 2.5 crankbaits . What lenght , action etc. would you guys suggest? Thanks Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 3, 2016 Global Moderator Posted February 3, 2016 I use a 7' MH/M for my squarebills. 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 3, 2016 Super User Posted February 3, 2016 I use a BPS 7'4" Extreme. It is allegedly a medium action. I think of it as a MH backbone and it is more "tippy" than any other 7'4" rod I've seen. The semi-flexible tip seems to give me all the distance I need and when I get bit the rod has enough backbone to get the fish up and out of the cover pretty quickly. I generally throw square bills on an abrasion resistant mono 17 lb test the vast majority of the time. Quote

Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 3, 2016 Super User Posted February 3, 2016 I use a Fenwick HMG 7'2" M-MF, it is a medium but it is rated 3/8oz to 1oz. The length gives it more backbone as the mod fast tip gets into the backbone pretty quick which makes it nice for banging square bills through cover or ripping traps off of grass. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I just started using a Powell 3D 734, so far it seems to be a great squarebill rod. 7'-3" 1/4oz.-1oz. a lot of backbone in it! Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted February 3, 2016 Super User Posted February 3, 2016 I throw the 100 - 200 size squarebills on a St. Croix LTB 7'2" M/M and absolutely love it. If you want a little more backbone the MH/M will give you that. Quote
collinfiske_RFC Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I have a 7'6 MH Veritas Winch for cranking. The rod tip is really soft but still has power when you set the hook. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 3, 2016 Global Moderator Posted February 3, 2016 I use a Phenix X11 composite rod for all cranking. Mike Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted February 3, 2016 Super User Posted February 3, 2016 I use a dobyns champion 684cb and a Shimano Crucial 7' M-M. 1 Quote
DTack Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 7 foot, medium heavy graphite made for a crankbait. Quote
Cgrinder Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Megabass Flat Side Special is one of the better 1.5 rods imo. 7' 4.5 power and whatever flex regular is. Quote
Lunker Chunker 88 Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 You can't go wrong with a BPS Crankin' Stick. Awesome rod and for an awesome price. I use a 7' medium for my square bills. Quote

LunkerFisher Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 7' gen 1 Veritas mmf gets the nod from me for squares, shallows (dt6, etc) and lipless. Plenty of backbone and I just keep the braid off to maintain enough give for the treble hooks. Quote

If you don't want to spend that much, the Fury comes in 705cb, which is pretty good. I like it more than my Veritas. Quote
JustinU1X Posted February 11, 2016 Posted February 11, 2016 6'9 MH-MF, I'm usually aiming at specific targets. Stumps, letdowns, etc.. MH helps get fish out of cover and a soft tip helps keep it pinned. Quote
