Robert Riley Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 What line do you use for jerkbaits? I'm debating mono or fluoro, but I've seen a lot about YZH. I'm a bit partial to mono, since I use the same rod for topwaters, and if I can use the same reel, that'd be pretty convenient. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 2, 2016 Global Moderator Posted February 2, 2016 10 pound Big Game. 2 Quote
illinifan4152 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 I use 10 lb the majority of the time. Either copolly or flouro. I dont throw much of a jerkbait late season, I usually switch to a fluke for then. So my setup is dedicated to Jerkbaits almost exclusively. So that's why I can get away with just the flouro. Usually seaguar invisix or mccoys xtra clear copolly. Quote
MDBowHunter Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 If your using it for top water as well as jerkbaits I'd go with 10# copoly or mono. Fluoro will kill all the action of your top water baits because it sinks. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 12# sunline super naatural 3 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 I go with Bluebasser, 10lb Big Game. Quote
DirtyDeuceGoose Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Careful using fluoro. Because of its sinking properties, if you pause for 5+ seconds between jerks, the line actually has a chance to have sunk below a suspending jerkbait. That way when you jerk, you're having to snap that extra bit out and then your bait follows. It can muddy up your cadence. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 Yo-Zuri Hybrid is a good all-around line. For treble hook lures I am currently experimenting with Sunline Defier Armilo which comes highly recommended by several members here. 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 When I am working a jerkbait, I want my bait to move when I twitch my rod so I do not like lines that stretch. Nothing but braid for my jerkbait fishing. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 i have 8# yozuri hybrid. i know a little light, but has a breaking strength closer to 12# Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 I like 14 lb Fireline Crystal with a short, foot to foot and a half fluorocarbon leader. ( I throw jerk baits 99% of the time on spinning gear) I like the no stretch. I'd like to think that the short fluorocarbon leader gives the bait a slightly nose down attitude in the water, which I think is good. I like how when you've got the bait down and paused, the Fireline Crystal is easy to see and it works kind of like a strike indicator does when you are trout fishing, i.e. you will see the line move way before you feel anything. It is a system that works for me. Quote

FC for getting down a little deeper while others do good with #6 lb. to #10 lb. Co-Poly . I have found #10 lb. Big Game to be as good as anything with a little KVDline treatment on a 6:3:1 baitcaster married to my 6'6" M Fast Jerkbait rod . 1 Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 Im going to try sunline armilo this season Quote
bunkerbstr Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Mostly fluoro, usually 12 pound Sunline or Trilene for 100+ size baits. On smaller baits, like the 78's, I use spinning with 10 pound PP and a fairly long 8-10 pound fluoro leader. Quote
WI_Angler1989 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 +1 to the mono users. I've used Stren recently and like it a lot. It works well for jerkbaits because it has a bit of stretch, which helps the acation for me. Braid or fluoro have no stretch and don't get the same erratic retrieve as mono. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 I use both, on extra spools for my spinning reels. Mono's buoyancy is helpful in really shallow water and around vegetation. FC for deeper use and in wind as it's density bucks wind better. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 8 to 12# line will work just fine in both flourocarbon and mono. Quote

I mainly use Stren Super Knot. 8 or 10lb. Casts great, pretty abrasion resistant, good feel to it. I'm not against flouro with jerkbaits, but I fish them over grass a lot of the time, and I feellike I have more control of the bait when the line doesn't sink. Quote

Stren has always served me well. I fish a LOT of shallow rivers that have lots of depth change which makes sinking lines harder to use and easier to lose the lure. I've always had trouble deciding which fluoro to use as a mainline line. I use spinning gear and know how tough some lines and tests can be with them. Mainly I do braid to fluoro leader. Quote

Super User WIGuide Posted February 2, 2016 Super User Posted February 2, 2016 If your rod doubles as a topwater rod as well, go with 10 or 12 lb mono. 1 Quote
Hogsticker Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I tend to fish jerkbaits two ways, erratic and super erratic. I have a hard time slowing down and really need to focus in order to do so. Erratic I use 11 lb Sunline Defier. Super erratic I use 40 lb Seaguar Smackdown. Quote
