This has nothing to do with fishing, however since Plastisol is only available to the public for pouring bait, (I cannot find any other small scale suppliers) this seems to be the best place to ask my questions. I have tried several other fishing and model casting forums with no luck.

I want to buy clear soft Plastisol that floats in water, add hardener to it, and use it to mold a flying disk (Frisbee)

I was thinking I would get the "green" maximum flexibility plastic available from Lurecraft.

I am trying to recreate a product like this.

EDIT: this forums wont allow me to make a link with under 10 posts and also registration was a pain in the butt.

BEFORE I BUY 100 dollars worth of material I would like to know if its even POSSIBLE first.

My questions are:

1) Can you add too much hardener to the Plastisol? is there a limit to how much you can add?

2) How much (approximately) hardener would I need to add to produce the desired results? how much to make it hard and yet still flexible?

3) After Plastisol cures, will fresh Plastisol adhere/bond to it?

4) Is it possible for Plastisol to have the characteristics I am looking for? or will my Frisbee turn into an expensive blob of soft plastic not suitable for flying or fishing?

I know that these Frisbees are generally made using injection molding and blends of plastic which are cheaper than plastisol, however I do not have several thousand dollars to invest in an injection molding machine.

Thanks for answering my questions about Plastisol!

really?

Thanks for the fast response, but its a tad off-topic.

you have no idea what the inference to the screen name is, negative or positive...only that I used it. because of that, you argue a moot point. Not that it matters, but it was not my first choice and I simply used it after unsuccessfully trying several others.  I have had complaints before in other forums, but seriously... the name is not offensive in itself and I am not pushing anything religious and I find that religious people.. and i am assuming you are one... like to complain about anything that they deem against their religion even though I have not done anything and you merely have the impression that I am mocking the name. what If i was glorifying it?. I can honestly say that I am doing NEITHER. the name is indifferent.

besides... if you are religious, wwjd?

accept me with open arms no matter what my beliefs?

don't be hatin' on my screenname! thanks for the warm welcome.

p.s. I have wasted enough time on registration and posting, and I wont be wasting any more time replying to spam. Just though tI would explain myself to someone who really did not deserve it, but I did it anyway, because thats just the kind of guy I am!

Yes . Brand dependent though. Its a trial and error recipe.

2) How much (approximately) hardener would I need to add to produce the desired results? how much to make it hard and yet still flexible? See #1

3) After Plastisol cures, will fresh Plastisol adhere/bond to it?

No, It will delaminate on you pretty quickly, it has to be poured while still hot.

4) Is it possible for Plastisol to have the characteristics I am looking for? or will my Frisbee turn into an expensive blob of soft plastic not suitable for flying or fishing? I would say the latter. I do not believe it would work. Plastisol is pretty dense and heavy.

Thank you GMAN

I guess the best thing would be to check manufacturers specifications on the brand of Plastisol since you suggest that they vary for amounts of hardener that can be used..

as for the density, I am aware that there are different types of Plastisol, however there are a few that DO float in water and are buoyant.

This is not a normal frisbee, it is more like a discus (sp?)

it is meant to be heavier than a normal frisbee, So i dont find the heaviness of the plastic a determining factor in its usefulness..

The Frisbees are between 185 - 200 grams (quite heavy)

What I am trying to understand about the characteristics of the plastic is, can enough hardener be added to make it as firm as in the video where I describe and show the product?  Basically I am just wondering if I can add enough hardener to make it just as firm as the Frisbee in the video, or if that consistency of the plastic would be impossible to achieve because it would require adding more than the maximum amount of hardener.

has anyone added enough hardener to their bait (accidentally perhaps) to cause the plastic to come out like this? I am hoping to be able to make the plastic hard enough so that I can tap the plastic on a hard surface and be able to produce a sound.  my fear is that I will add the maximum amount of hardener and it still will not be hard enough.

@ basser223

you sent me a pm.. but I cannot even REPLY to pm until I have 10 posts.

To answer your question,

The reason I chose this name is because that's what I said outloud after about 6 attempts at registering this account and failed due to such high security restrictions and also trying other names without success.

It was like, an epiphany I guess. Used the name in other instances where I had similar circumstances.

brilliant yes?

@ roadwarrior

you also sent me a pm.

my name "WAS" Inappropriate? as far as I know my name has not been changed. it does not violate the rules I have read them.

I have no other agenda, like I said. someone just didnt like my name and they felt the need probably to be a tattle tale.

some people have too much time on their hands and like to complain to people online about total strangers.

excuuuuuuse me that there are morons out there who take offense IN A NAME!

I know this is a bass fishing forums, thanks for the warning i guess.. but I wont need it as i do not plan to talk about religion in any way shape or form as I have already previously explained.

For the record I also find your nam offensive. You are definatley not glorifying it.

But I will answer your question. Or at least I will point in the right direction. If you would have used a better aproach I would have given you the actual links but I am giving you enough for you to acomplish your goal.

Plastisol will not work. It will never do the things you want it to do. There are a lot of other materials that will work that you can buy in small quantities. You are looking in the wrong direction. You need to google casting resins, silicone, urathane resins etc and find sites that sell these different material. Then you need to call them and speak with their tech. Explain what you are trying to acomplish and they will tell what to use and how to build it.

Howdy,

Sorry for the uproar over your screen name, but you'll need to change it per our policy:

http://www.bassresource.com/bass_fishing_forums/YaBB.pl?num=1172273207

As you can see by this thread, there's a distinct reason behind this policy.

I have changed it to a temporary name for you.

Thanks!

Glenn

You are free to find my name offensive. It still breaks no rules. if I was glorifying it, then perhaps it WOULD break the rules since we are not supposed to be discussing religion in here, but because as i said, its indifferent, you can make your own assessment of it and I cannot control peoples opinion.

as for your suggestions, I have tried many different forums and casting resins and none have every property that I am looking for.

plastisol is clear, plastisol floats in water, plastisol is flexible,

plastisol is relatively cheap.

I have already spoken with techs, hence my video has over 100 views. none can recommend anything viable. I have posted in many casting forums already.

As i previously mentioned, these frisbees are usually injection molded. I cannot afford the equipment.

I am trying to pioneer a new material for making these Frisbees without the expensive equipment.

You simply state it will not work.

Care to explain why?

I want it to float, Plastisol (most brands) floats

I want it to be clear, most Plastisol is clear.

I want it to be flexible, most Plastisol is flexible.

I want to be able to vary the hardness, you can add hardener to Plastisol.

Name me ONE CASTING RESIN that displays these qualities.

I will be happy to research it further.

So many people have told others that what they want is impossible, without ever trying it themselves. can you give me an example of why it will not work? because just telling me that it will not work is not very convincing.

nothing wrong with my approach, the topic was not changed by me, I only am responding to it since it seems to have generated so much attention. No need to refrain from helping in any way just because of a petty disagreement.

sorry glen your link is broken! I cant read the post you linked to.

I did read the rules however, and I did not see anything about screennames... and I am obviously not discussing religion.. just look at my first post.

you are the administrator and can make rules up as you go. I am used to it. Just noticed that you edited the rules just now and added "screennames" to the list of religious things that are not allowed. All because of me! I feel important. As you can see I was following the rules, and the rules have now changed AFTER the fact.

I take no offense to the name change.

I will keep the name you gave me.

It does make me laugh though how some people can be accommodated over their opinion when it effects another users rights... as i said I am used to it.

some poor Shlup with no life is undoubtedly rejoicing over winning his e-battle over my screenname. pathetic!

cheers!

p.s. I cannot quote your reply because it has a link and I am not at 10 posts yet LOL... editing it now.

P.P.S.

Roadwarrior removed the link to my PERSONAL VIDEO which is allowed per the rules... I cannot post links because I have not reached 10 posts yet so I added spaces to the url.

so, I can type out another 3 posts... then my link will be acceptable? was it removed for this reason? personal videos are accepted.. i read the rules... sheesh!

should I bother posting it again after I have reached 10 posts? an edit WITH EXPLANATION would have been preferable. did you seriously remove my url that I added spaces to so it would post because I have not posted 10 posts yet?

not trying to make any enemies here.. and LOOK.. my screenname has changed.. gimme a break guys!!!!!

you got what you wanted and i am not flaming/trolling anyone.

Banned.  Good bye.

I have experimented with plastisols, urathanes, silicons etc for about 20 years. I am pretty knowledgable but I do not know everything.

First, when working with plastisol, the harder it is the more difficult it becomes. It bunrs much faster, it is much thicker, it cools and thickens much faster. What this means is, it has to be super hot to even make it pourable. Well because of the hardner it burns much easier. See those two thing are conflicting. you are talking about much harder then a hard saltwater type plastisol. Also the harder the plastisol, the less oil is in it. That means it doesnt float anymore.

Would it be impossible to make your frisbee out it? Probably not impossible but most likeley extremely difficult.

Some suggestions.

There are additives you can add to most materials to make them float and alter their flexability. However floating additives will make your product opaque.

You just might have to compromise one of your criteria.

I suggest you you go to smooth-on and sil-pak and speek to their techs. If they can not answer your questions then you may not be able to make you disk they way you want to.

is that some sort of reference counting down my time before I am banned?
