I have a Black Max that I bought as an emergency stand-in about four years ago. I used it pretty hard for a couple of seasons, even dropped it in the lake once. After a deep cleaning and re-lube it's still working perfectly. While I wouldn't compare it to any top-of-the-line reels, for less than $50, it's a heck of a reel.

I just bought one on clearance for $29 for my son to learn on -take out there and do what he will. :)

The reviews are across the board great on the reels. But when I received it my sense of aesthetics were offended. The first thing I did was take some steel wool and buff down those glossy plastic side covers! Just couldn't stand seeing a plastic-looking reel. Also going to replace the plastic chrome handle nut cover. Otherwise it functions well and will serve it's purpose. If it lasts a couple seasons I'll add my positive review to the long list of them already out there.

A bargain reel or rod exceeding expectations is almost as good, if not as good, as a high end reel or rod actually living up to expectations.  IMHO of course.

Congrats on your trip and I'm glad the reel was a success!

Black Max is the first BC reel that I have owned and learned how to use. It has pretty nice braking system!

Can't be beat at their price point IMO.  They also seem to last a good time. Though most of the guys I have sold them to return within a year to upgrade to a reel with better features.

I feel like once a week we answer a question about this reel. Is it great? No, not by any stretch of the imagination. It is however the best baitcaster you'll find anywhere for under 70 dollars retail.

I don't need another reel, but every time I'm at Walmart I look at the newest MAX3 ones.  Seem very smooth and nice for $50.

I bought one last July and like it quite a bit. I just bought a Silvermax because I got a BC rod from Dicks for $13. Haven't gotten a chance to use that yet since all the water around me is currently solid.
