I picked up a pack of these and they had absolutely no action. I also had to burn a 7.1 reel just to try to keep them on the surface. Is this the norm with these or did I get a bad pack?

Had to get a bad pack or are rigging it wrong. What hook, line? Folks around here claim I have an addiction to them...

Man... idk buddy. That should be a perfect set up. I throw them on 12-15 mono on a 4/0 twist lock ewg on a burner reel but basically slow roll them and they stay up and throw great water. I'd try another pack, if you have the same issue move to a rage toad.

definitely a bad pack or the rigging is wrong even though it seems like yo have the right terminal tackle.  I prefer screw locks myself but i did the EWG for a while too and they worked fine.  They are more of a subtle buzz than other fronts like the ribbits which give you more action with their paddle tail style feet.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll have to grab another pack before the topwater bite gets good I guess.

I actually have used the rage toads gardnerjigman.  Did great with them too, got several fish over 3 pounds on a single outing with them near the end of topwater season last year and figured I'd pick these up to have a different profile if the rage toads aren't cutting it on an outing.

I have confidence in and have had good luck with Horny Toads, June Bug or Watermelon Seed, in shallow water. I use 4-0 screw lock unweighted or 1/16 oz weighted and braid line. Lots of the bites happen when I pause to let it drop into a hole in the vegetation or let it sink to the bottom of lily pads. The bass will usually hold on to it, and the hook up ratio has been best for me when I give full slack for 4 seconds while I reel down gently -- and then set hard.

Man... you wouldn't  touch a fish in our waters if you used that hook set method here.

Wouldnt. Slack line and waiting for seconds would miss most fish around here.

A jig I'll swing at right away, but thick plastics like soft swimbaits and soft frogs I personally have much better luck if I wait a couple of seconds. I think the fish either takes the bait down a little further a second or two after it first inhales it, or else the fish clamps down harder after a second or two and gets that hook point right against the mucosa. In either case swinging after a short delay is less likely to pop the frog out of their mouth, in my experience. Sometimes the first blowup of the day takes me by surprise and I set too soon and miss, and the frog goes flying over my head. After that I force myself to be patient and wait a couple of seconds. I said earlier four seconds but it's probably two. It always seems longer though, as I can hardly wait to swing hard and nail the brute.

Another thing, once I know the frog is in the bass, either because there was a blowup and the frog is gone or because the line is moving, I'll reel the slack up just till I almost feel the fish before swinging hard. I don't want to warn the bass that something bad is going to happen. I want the bad news delivered as a complete surprise.

I fished horny toads for years as my "alternate" frog............I prefer hollow body frogs first, but often would switch to the horny toad when I felt the need to cover water a little quicker. A few years ago I tried the Stanley Ribbit Frogs.................at the end of the day I threw all my horny toads in the trash.

Ribbit's are a top water machine! I use the dual hook setup and they work great. Another option for throwing a top water buzz frog is the RI Trixie Shark. A lot smaller but just as deadly, especially if retrieved just under the water.

OP. . check the cut in the tails of the pack you got. If they are not cut exactly the same it will cause what you're experiencing.
