TR4321 Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Is anyone aware of a cheat sheet or chart of preferences matching rod/reel/line setups to different types of lures and presentations? For example, what rod action and length, line type and test are recommended for topwater lures? Even if there is not cheat sheet or chart of preferences around, your personal preferences would be appreciated. I have a Abu Garcia Revo SX reel and Abu Garcia Veracity rod I use for everything now, but I am thinking of adding a few more rods/reels for more specific purposes like flipping, topwater, crankbait, and spinners. Super User Choporoz Posted January 29, 2016 Super User Posted January 29, 2016 Someone on here created and posted a pretty nice chart. I can't find the link, but here's a picture of it. Wish I knew the OP's handle, because credit is due! 7 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 He put a lot of work into that chart and deserves credit for sharing. Problem is, at the end of the day it's just one persons preference and opinion. At first glance it looks like a lot if not most of us would concur but you'll get more asking about each technique as you get ready to try it. 3 Quote

IIRC, there were two things that struck me when this was posted. One was the humble acknowledgement by Mr. Schwartzkopf of exactly what you said. The other was how little dissent there was in the initial reactions. I think its a great starting point for those without a lot of experience with different range of rods. Quote
Robert Riley Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Man. I was gonna post mine and the *** one... But nevermind, that one is much clearer and... great! Quote

Josh254 Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 I was very happy to fin this thread and see that chart to put things in perspective for me but I was wondering about 1 bait I didn't see there which would be spoons and the various types of them. Could someone tell me what type of rod, line, reel etc. you recommend for those? 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted February 9, 2021 Super User Posted February 9, 2021 Thanks for topping. Still a pretty good chart, IMO. Soooo many different spoons.....might need their own chart. Could you be more specific? I have thrown small Little Cleos on ML spinning with 6# test, Johnson Minnows on 30#braid.... 1+oz flutter spoons on HF w/17# fluoro....and others. Quote

Oh wow, I didn't even know there were that many lol. Lets just say the beginner spoons, casting, nano, jigging I suppose would be beginner type spoons right? Super User Boomstick Posted February 10, 2021 Super User Posted February 10, 2021 The chart above is about as much as you could ask for. I would not say any one presentation is wrong, but there is usually a range of rods you can use depending on preference, cover and a bunch of other factors. For example, I use a M/XF rod for poppers and jerkbaits which runs on the lighter side in terms of power and a H/F rod for frogs and we all know that heavy rods have their place for jig fishing and even sometimes T-Rigs as well. Alex Ball Posted June 27, 2021 Posted June 27, 2021 Nano spoon- 5.5 to 6.5 ft rod UL/L MF/F with 4-8lb FC or 10-20Lb braid on a spinner or a BFS baitcaster like the KastKing Zephyr between 481-581 on spinners and 661-811 on BFS. Small Jig/Casting (1/4-1oz) - 6-7ft M/MH M/MF with 12-17lb FC or 30-65lb braid on a 531-591 BC or Round Large J/C (1-3oz)- 7-8ft H MF/F with 17-25lb FC or 65-100lb braid on a 481-591 Round or mag BC Mag J/C (3+oz)- 7.5-9ft H/XH F with 40-100 lb Mono/FC or any braid above 100lb that specs to rod on a 481-601 Mag Round. Hope it helps. Below is a short history of the spoon. The Spoon has been argued to be the ORIGINAL artificial lure going back to the late 1700's by some accounts. Earliest known example is from the 1840's. Think about that..... ancient in this hobby is 70 years old and these can be verified at 2.5x times older. Teddy Roosevelt loved them. Trout was his game. As for bass history, this is what anybody back in the dark ages when the bass was considered by most to be a nuisance fish(pre-1960 really, if you can believe that), would use paired with an old school round or spinner reel, some 8lb mono and a matched rod like Heddon. Off to Guntersville or Okechobee they'd go. Later, around the 80's, bass fishing became rocket science with Shimano revolutionizing the Baitcaster and companies like Yamamoto and Booyah gaining notice for doing the same with lures and soft plastics. the spoon, perfect already, got left behind because you can't reinvent perfect. Mann's tried and ultimately succeeded with the Leroy Brown lipless crank. which was basicall y a plastic spoon with a rattle inside and a fancy paint job. LCB's became hot and bye bye spoon. Outside of a select few companies, they've really become a bargain lure on places like amazon where you can get 30 for 20 bucks. War Eagle and the Ben Parkers com to mind as well as Patton's for a quality Bass Spoon. As for your original question, here you go. Think of them like a swimbait and apply that setup with aspects of the crank setup. Don't worry, got you covered. Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted June 27, 2021 Super User Posted June 27, 2021 I'm pretty sure Lefty doesn't use the same clubs as Tiger... Quote
Alex Ball Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 The only one I see differently is the frog setup for hollow body. My only difference is the GR. I'm a 64-75 guy on my Scummos and BPCs. But as he so eloquently put it, it's his opinion based on experience. Incredible list. I build setups for other guys; I'm basically a semi-pro fishing buddy. This will be my Rosetta Stone. TYSM for posting this. Holy Grail stuff. Quote
CrankFate Posted June 28, 2021 Posted June 28, 2021 I wouldn’t look at the chart. A fisherman is not going to do the best by studying these things. You can follow that chart religiously. It’s not going to help with the most important things. Finding fish, knowing what to throw, rigging it right for the conditions and proper action in the water. Even if these four things are the holy grail, none of us can do them all all the time, even if you know them all. You just have to observe listen, read and fish. Quote
