Super User F14A-B Posted January 28, 2016 Super User Posted January 28, 2016 I saw this occur from the flight line at NAS Cecil Field Fl. We were launching SAR aircraft to recover the external fuel tank, obviously that mission changed. I could never forget this. God bless America for all of our innovations & our greatness as a people.. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 28, 2016 Super User Posted January 28, 2016 I was in the car coming home from college, and the DJ on the radio said they would have more info on the explosion as it became available. 1 Quote
Super User Nitrofreak Posted January 28, 2016 Super User Posted January 28, 2016 Truly hard to believe that happened that long ago, I was working in the D.C. area at the time as an automotive tech, we watched the whole thing from launch to when the unthinkable happened. There are a lot of things that have happened to us as a nation that should never be forgotten about, America is the greatest place on earth because of her people and the courage they have. 3 Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted January 28, 2016 Super User Posted January 28, 2016 I can't believe it's been 30 yrs already. I was in the 6th grade, when one of the teachers came in upset and announced the Challenger Space Shuttle suffered a tragic accident. Sad day indeed. 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 28, 2016 Super User Posted January 28, 2016 I was watching the launch at CNN when a few moments later ----> boom ! Just as I was watching the news on the "small aircraft" collision on the WTC 9/11 when the second jet plane crashed against the other tower. Now that I come to think about it, I never watch the news but when I do beware cuz some bad stuff is gonna happen. 1 Quote
atcoha Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Hard to forget. I remember watching the previous launch from my bus stop before school in Miami, yes, we could see it in the sky from that far away. We watched the disaster on tv in class, sad day. Watching the launches in school is a fond memory. Not sure if they do that anymore, need to ask my kids when they get home from school. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted January 29, 2016 Super User Posted January 29, 2016 I remember it because I was in trouble in school so i was eating my lunch in the office and they had it on TV so i got to watch it firsthand. I'll always remember the assistant principal dropping the F bomb....and this was a private christian school lol 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 29, 2016 Super User Posted January 29, 2016 STS 51L Challenger "Teacher in Space" was a horrible as children in class rooms watch the explosion across the country. Still leaves a hollow place in our hearts and NASA forever. Tom 1 Quote
