I love fishing top-water baits (who doesn't?) and I'm always looking to try something I've never used.  The Cordell Pencil Popper caught my eye, but it's just too big. Does anyone know if this style bait comes in a smaller size (4-5in.) and if so, where can I find them?

I like the Gunfish 135.  It's 5.5" and a full ounce.  You might take a look at the Gunfish 117, it's got that shape but is only 4.5" and 3/5 of an ounce.  It sells for only $9-$10  All the Gunfish are great but they aren't shaped the same.  I know Evergreen also makes a similar bait that comes in a couple of sizes called the Shower Blows.  They are a little more pricey than the Gunfish.  TW carries all these baits.

I know the Cordell Pencil Popper only comes in 2 sizes 6-inch 1oz and the 7-inch 2oz. They use them up here for Striper's with great success.

Edited this post as I might have found an answer. Gibb's makes a Pencil Popper that is 4 1/2" and a 1/2oz. Colors appear somewhat limited as they are mostly for salt water but they might be an option to look at. They are also almost double the price.

I fish for bass with 6 inch hard baits so I would think you might catch some bass with the 6 inch size.

What's wrong with large size pencil popper? The old Arborgast Musky sized Jitterbug has taken a LOT of big bass!

I grew up throwing the Cotton Cordell Pencil Popper for Striped Bass from the Surf and it is a great lure. I have only used it a few times in the lakes here in Florida but at 7" it is a large topwater lure and strikes are not as common compared to your standard 100mm size pencil.

Academy has the Pistol topwater pencil popper which is a Gunfish clone or copy, same with the new Boyd Ducket lures I think made by Viscious.

I just recently purchased a Lucky Craft Gunfish in a new size 117MM for $8.99 at Bass Pro and usually the Gun Fish sells for $15 and up and comes in a bunch of sizes & colors. I have always used the 135mm and love it on windy days, and they make some killer colors. I have not used the new one I purchased but they offer it in I think 5 colors and I tested it in the pond where I live and it looked awesome.

I also throw the Tsunami Talking pencil which is Similar to the Cordell, only they make a 4" and 5" with really good hooks and they cast a mile and the action is really good. I have a few of the Academy H20 Pistol Minnows and they are a steal for $3.99, plus with $25 and free shipping they have good looking house brand lures. I actually prefer the saltwater Pistol Minnow as it comes with a dressed treble, and strong hooks since I usually throw them on heavy line....

Hope that helps...

I can vouch for the Evergreen SB and the Duo pencil 110. The Evergreen has the best action and the Duo has the best one knocker sound IMO.

If you want a lure that is identical in shape and action to the Cordell Pencil Popper since it is unique, and is smaller in size I would say the closest I have seen is the Hurricane Zig Zag Plug...They make smaller models in the 3" range with the exact same shape, and I don't know how they sell them so cheap.

They come with a pivot treble hook on the front which is a Mustad, and it is harder for fish to throw since it rotates 360 degrees. They also have a dressed rear trailer hook, long cast bearings, and if the package didn't say Hurricance, you could easily slip it into a a different brand's package and it would sell for over 10 bucks.

The Cordell Pencil has an action that is hard to replicate from smaller lures imo.... At 7" it is thin, and will get bit by bass of all sizes, but it does cut down on the amount of strikes. Kind of like fishing a big Swimbait. The only other brands I have seen with a lure with the same shape are Ima, Evergreen, and I think Paycheck....The weighting of the Cordell gives it that action which is hard to replicate but the Hurricane does it well, probably the same OEM....
