Worm Man 2020 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 mono backing v/s old #20 faded/old power pro? Can you tie mono 12lb. to 100% fluorocarbon 17lb. as main line? Using double uni-knot? or is there a better knot? Or would it be better/stronger to put electrical tape around spool and put braid as backer, then double uni-knot to the 17lb. fluorocarbon? Going to fish 50 foot water for big stripper/Rock Fish... Already have one spooled with straight 65lb. Power Pro, thinking of just adding 100% fluorocarbon leader to that one for shallow areas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Quote
Jaheff Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Whats your total spool capacity the line is going on? The Uni to Uni will be fine whatever line you decide to go with. I would personally go electrical or Teflon tape, and go with braid. That way if the stripper does run. your weak line is still the 17# main line. There are a few options to achieve what your trying to accomplish. I personally like 40# braid to 17# or 20# Fluoro, with fish that run. Quote
Worm Man 2020 Posted January 26, 2016 Author Posted January 26, 2016 One is: LEWS Speed Spool, LFS,120/12lb. gear ratio 6.8:1 PAIRED ON ROD: Field & Stream FEHTSBC610MHXF 6'10", line wt.10-20lb., lure wt. 1/4-1oz.Action: Medium-Heavy Extra Fast Two is: Shimano Chronarch CI4+150.PAIRED ON ROD: MOJO BASS MJC68MHF 6'8", 12-20lb., 3/8-1oz. Then the manual states: MONO line capacity 10/120,12/110,14/90..... POWER PRO line capacity 20/150, 30/135 40/105 Gear ratio 6.2:1 How much backing in yards, I've read on another site; just a few wraps? And any suggestion on the best on for finesse/drop shot? Go straight braid or mono, no need to use flouro. Depending on where and when you are fishing, there is a chance to hook a fish that will get you to the backing, so don't. On a baitcaster I'd go 30 braid, or 20 mono. MD guys use 10-15 lb braid with a leader a lot, I don't see the sense, but to each his own. If you are fishing deep stick to the braid. Quote
Jaheff Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 The few wraps your revering to is just like using tape on the spool. Because both your reels are low capacity reels, i woud go braid with leader. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted January 26, 2016 Super User Posted January 26, 2016 I HATE when the strippers run. Stripers now, that's a different story. 2 Quote

I do like stripers. I grew up fishing Wateree because my family has a house on it. But in the last 5 years, I've only gone there enough to make sure my boat will run. My mom passed away a few years ago and it's just not the same. I've been down the Wateree R a few times in the kayak, but that's a chore getting shuttled back. I bought a kayak a few years ago and started fishing a local reservoir that I got permission from a landowner to go in. They have a landing too so I can take my big boat if the water's too cold to get the soggy butt. It's a lot easier to catch fish in a huge pond with no competition. And there are some really big bass in it. There are two other small ponds that people let me fish as well. Quote

Yeah, I caught some juvenile stripers on the Wateree R last May. I let them go. When I got to the landing in Camden the game warden told me they were out of season and it's illegal to even target them. The Wateree R joins the Congaree and that feeds the Santee-Cooper lakes. So the same rules apply because stripers run upriver to spawn. However, on the other side of the Lake Wateree dam, the limit is 10 of any size all year because they're stocked. Quote
Worm Man 2020 Posted January 26, 2016 Author Posted January 26, 2016 I'll have to check that out on map, Lake Marion And Santee Cooper hold all kinds of tournaments, pretty sweet, just have to get that sun gear/protection out and sweat, sweat, and sweat. Have a lot of family down around Charleston, but them boys like to salt water fish and if new to this and can't swim like I just too. They call me BOB, as in bobber. I just fish the little reservoirs in Maryland, their electric only, now I bought this aircraft carrier, I'm heading south/ mallard duck..... Quote
