Does anyone use this or yellow? I've always used green braid.  Wondering if anyone uses white or yellow and why.

Thanks

Yellow. Much easier to see...

Posted

for lures that i tie direct—like lipless cranks—i throw green braid. for everything else, i use white or yellow braid with a fluorocarbon leader. the fish don't care because they don't see it because of the leader but it helps me out tremendously to be able to see the line. when i first started doing this, i used hi-vis yellow only to discover that it's not that easy to see against cattails and bullrushes so i switched to white. white is my favorite because there's absolutely no bleeding or fading.

I throw yellow braid on nearly all of my set ups. My spinning rods get a FC leader. The yellow is amazing for line watching and detecting bites.

I prefer white if I can find it available. Actually, pink or chartreuse are my favorites, but aren't easy to find.

Thanks guys. I think I'll try yellow and a light green this year. My problem is I've never tied on a leader and it seems like it would take a lot of practice to get it right. Looks like I have some work to do because I really don't want to always tie directly to braid.

Do you recommend a long FC leader to go through the eyes or shorter leaders?

Lastly is Alberto the way to go? I know there will be different opinions on this.

Thanks

I use braid on a spinning rod with a FC leader and I've tried green, white, yellow and neon lime.  Green is almost impossible for me to see.  The white worked well at first but started to get dirty with use and became less visible. Yellow worked well, but for MY eyes I think neon lime was the easiest to see.  I would love to try pink but have only found it in the Gliss line and after using it the past couple months I don't like it.

I generally make my leaders about 3 feet long and it runs through the guides with no noticeable problems.  I personally use a uni-to-uni knot and have found no reason to try a different knot but as you said you will get different opinions on this.  I was intimidated at first to tie on a leader but with an hour of practicing at home I got pretty good at it. Now I can tie on a leader in less than a minute standing in the middle of a river.

I go with shorter leaders - 2 feet or less and I reel up to the knot and I try not to go past it.   I've gone with longer leaders in the past.  No real issues with reeling the knot through the guides other than it seemed to cost me a little bit of distance casting wise.  After a while it seemed pointless to beat up the knot unnecessarily.

I use the Gliss line in yellow. Mostly because its so thin that there's no way I could easily see a clear/brown/green line.

All braid starts out white and then color is added later. Apparently, there is no way to colorize the polymer that the strands are made from (that are then woven into braid). The colored dyes are added later and end up just on the surface of the fibers, which is why the lines tend to bleed and slowly lose color. It makes logical sense to purchase white braid, which is the natural color anyway, and ought to be cheaper. But it's hard to find.

Stren has a white braid but I don't really like it because it seems very stiff. Anyway, to tell the truth, white braid freaks me out because it seems too visible, so I end up blackening the final several inches with a Sharpie. Theoretically, white should be the least visible to the fish when used for top water applications, because the sky looks white from under the surface. But that little bit in front of the nose of my frog or buzz bait that the fish may see from the side bothers me so I blacken it.

I don't like to add a  mono leader to my braid because, besides leaders being a pain in the butt, I have had in the past a couple of lines break at my uni knot when setting the hook. So now I'm permanently superstitious about directly tied leaders. There is too much superstition in fishing. I guess we can't help it. It's a vulnerability, and tackle sellers take full advantage of it.

What brand do you use- I have yet to see white braid and am curious.

What specifically don't you like about the Gliss line? Just wondering because I recently bought a spool of it (hi-vis green) and am fence sitting on which rig I want to put it on, finesse (spinning) or jig (casting). Leaning towards the finesse...

I'm using 24# Gliss on a ML spinning rod. Initially I loved it. The 24# is thinner than the 10# Sufix 832 I had been using and the Gliss casted a mile!!  No stretch and very sensitive. Now after several months of use the line is flattening out and starting to fray and the casting distance is no longer any better than I was getting with the Sufix 832 braid. I always tie on a FC leader, so the fraying is coming from the line running through the rod guides and not from rubbing it against rocks. I make a cast and the line at the reel is even slightly frayed. So with the line flattening out, bad fraying and decreased casting distance I've decided to go back to 10# 832 (neon lime) when I re-spool.
