oomph Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I'm interested in hearing about the MGX Spinning reel as well. I got one of those Villain Rods needing a reel. Quote
Molay1292 Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 The LP is light, smooth and casts well. Not worth the retail price IMO, if you can pick one up lightly used they make a for a nice reel. Quote
stk44 Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I have the LP MGX. I only have a revo sx, and a silver max to compare it to. I don't have any other high-end BC's to compare it to as to whether it's worth retail price, but I will say that I can confidently cast almost any bait from weightless to heavy with ease. It is so smooth and backlashes on 30-50 lb braid are almost nonexistent. I absolutely love the reel. Let me know if you have more questions and I'd be glad to give my honest opinion. 8 hours ago, oomph said: I'm interested in hearing about the MGX Spinning reel as well. Maybe start there and see if you need an MGX? One nice thing about the MGX is that it comes with a spare spool, if you need one. Quote
Fishinthefish Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 It's a nice reel, if it was the only reel I had ever held I would of loved it unconditionally, it was smooth, good casting distance, mechanically sound. With that said, having used other reels in the casting sector from 30 dollars, to 700 dollars. I was not impressed with it for the price point, and the competitiveness of the market in the area and price point. 350$ retail can buy you a lot of different options. I personally have a 230$ reel I am more a fan of than the MGX. Quote

oomph Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Right now, my go to reel in that $230 price range is the Shimano Stradic Ci4. However I don't mind fishing my less expensive Pflueger President and Ecooda Black Hawk from time to time. (Good reels for the money) Also good loaner reels for when I introduce friends to fishing. I don't own any Abdu Garcia reels, so I am considering matching my Abdu Garcia Villain rod with one. Quote
jtesch Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I personally think the MGX is a great reel. You can pick them up in the $250 dollar range and at that price it's a steal. One of the lightest reels made with a great break system. Read the TT reviews. Not really meant to be an all purpose reel but more of an all purpose finesse reel. I have 2 that are pushing 5 years old and haven't had a problem. The reel is perfect for pitching 1/8-3/8 rigs on a ML-M rod but I do use mine for heavier stuff up to 5/8. I highly recommend this reel if you can get it at a good price Quote
stk44 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Benthinkin, do you want info on a baitcaster or spinning mgx? Quote
bassbassontherange Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 They ARE excellent reels. I raved about them all year after finally caving and buying one last spring. Told my wife I wanted another and ended up with THREE more for Christmas from my parents, her parents, and my brother. Not a reel you need four of but I love having multiple gear ratios. That being said, message me if you're interested in a 7.1.1. A have a new one I might part with. Quote
oomph Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Spinning MGX is what I am interested in hearing about. Quote
ZeroSync Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 I just got a mgx spinning and there is friction noise when it's spinning. It's not real loud but it's far from silent. Any one else experiencing this? It doesn't feel smooth and the handle Only spins around a couple times by itself when I spin it. I have a $40 reel that feel wayyy smoother and spins more. I'm assuming this must be defective. Quote
stk44 Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 I would call Abu customer service and see what they recommend. This is a new reel I'm guessing? Quote
crypt Posted July 22, 2016 Posted July 22, 2016 have 2,love both cast's a mile, smooth as all get out. but darn they are light !!!!!! had to get used to that after using my 4600's. Quote

Brand new haven't used it once. This is currently my only reel and being from Canada they have brutal shipping times to deliver here. I been talking to them and I feel I should get a replacement but they want me to send it back for repair(which will take another month and a half to get here again) . Almost feels like I'd just be getting a refurbished reel.. Not a great experience for my first abu garcia product.. Not to mention this is suppose to be their best spinning reel.. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted July 25, 2016 Super User Posted July 25, 2016 ZeroSync where did you buy the reel? I would contact them and return the reel for full refund or store credit. That is a very expensive reel and if ABU were interested in treating you well it would be different. Right now Tackle Warehouse has the original Shimano Stradic CI4+ reels on sale for $190 to $210. These are the old version. The newer version will have a better bearing set and weigh a fraction less but it is not in stock yet. Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted July 26, 2016 Super User Posted July 26, 2016 I agree but since it came from them you may be stuck. Are they offering to pay for shipping? After all this is a brand new reel and you did nothing to it. This is a manufacturing defect. Is this where it came from? http://abugarcia.factoryoutletstore.com/?cid=219044&chid=2 Quote

When you reel the mgx spinning do you hear any noise at all? I get a slight friction noise and it seems like there is some resistance to spin the handle.. Quote
