IneedAnewScreenName-33448 Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 what line should i use for a chatterbait and why? Quote
Super User gardnerjigman Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 I like 12-15lb big game. Tough, and has the right amount of stretch for when they choke it and you hook that soft part of the inner mouth not to pull out. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 OK Alabama Freak, let's discuss the answer to your question. First, the Chatterbait - A "bladed jig" that you swim through the water like a spinnerbait. Second - What is a good line to keep the Chatterbait in the correct depth and having the shock absorbing features of a quality line and a strong test rating? Answer - Any fluorocarbon or copoly line with a test of at least 12-pounds. Some guys and gals go as high as 17-pounds but a quality 12-pound test fluorocarbon line will give you the necessary stretch, shock absorbing properties and strength to land those ladies. You have your favorite fluorocarbon line so spool it onto your favorite baitcaster reel and hit the water. Now, does anyone out there want to chime in on the reel ratio you suggest the Alabama Freak use for this technique??? 3 Quote
Fishinthefish Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 30 pound braid, more than strong enough to handle the shock of a fish hitting it. 6.x.1 or a 7.1.1 ratio reels will work, that way you can work em slow, or speed it up to get some serious action from the bait. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 24, 2016 Global Moderator Posted January 24, 2016 15lb Big Game, unless you're around grass, then I'd go with 40-50lb braid. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 Whatever you use for a spinnerbait will be fine. I'm a big fan of #12 Yo-Zuri Hybrid, Seaguar AbrazX and Tatsu. Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 12 lb flouro on a medium heavy rod.Just the right amount of stretch for me.Get good hook sets on that setup. 1 Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 I use 50lb braid. Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 i use 15-16# fluoro Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted January 24, 2016 Global Moderator Posted January 24, 2016 12# Yo-Zuri for chatterbaits and spinnerbait's on a 7' 2" mh/f Phenix M1 with a Curado I reel Mike Quote
pjd412 Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 50lb braid is what I plan to use with my next setup, otherwise 12lb fluoro sounds fine. Quote

What a great all around rod! Loving the reel too. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I used 20lb FC Sniper this past year and it worked flawlessly. Quote
bigturtle Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I use 15lb fluoro or 20lb mono depending on where im fishing Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted January 25, 2016 Super User Posted January 25, 2016 I use 14lb. Sniper fc or 15lb. Pline fc. Quote
Mike2841 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I use braid since that's what I have spoiled up on the majority of my rods, I think 12+ mono/flouro/copoly would work fine too Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 25, 2016 Super User Posted January 25, 2016 I have been using 15 pound Big Game. I haven't had any issues pulling through cover. Quote
