Fish Pellet Lure

Ok so we have fish feeders out at our lake for our Bluegill and Hybrid Striped Bass. But the carp are hammering the feed because we have no grass (thanks to our great lake management team).

So I want to make a brown pellet looking fly/lure to cast to these fish to have some fun in the hot summer sun. Be fun for some clients that have never fished before to hook into a 20+lb carp ;D

I was thinking about getting a straight shank hook and tying some brown mariobou on it and seeing if that will do. I need the hook to be small enough to make the maribou float so it looks like a actual fish pellet.

What hook would you recommend using? Any other ideas? Suggestions?

use some dry fly dubbing in the right color. make a big ole ball of it right on the middle of the hook. i did this to simulate bread balls for the bluegills that are so used to eating bread that people throw in the local park for ducks and slayed em. except i used rabbit fur dubbing so it would sink super slow like bread.

what hook should I use? I wnat something small enough to hide it but not so light that it'll straighten out when I hook up on a big whooper

i used those small little scud hooks with the curved backs. the curved back helps hide the hook.

this poses a big problem as you're gonna want a small hook since the fly is pretty small, but you're targeting big fish...

how big are the pellets they feed the fish? try and make your fly the same size or a little bigger. i don't know what size the biggest scud hook is but you could try that. you shouldn't have to worry about the hook sinking the fly if you use dry fly dubbing.

pellets are about the size of a Green Pea, I may try some Mustad Sheepshead SW fishing hooks they are small but strong

I'd take 2-3 of the real pellets, wrap them in a piece of fabric from some women's hosery, and use that as bait.  Carp are smell-oriented vegetarians and pretty smart about what they will eat.  Check out some of the boards about carp fishing - it's a big deal in Europe - to get ideas about how best to tempt them.

Or you could just wrap brown 2mm foam around a hook shank and tie it off with some brown 6/0. It floats and can absorb scents.

I'VE SEEN SOME PELLET FLIES FOR STOCKED TROUT BEFORE AND THEY WERE MADE TWO DIFFERENT WAYS.

THE FIRST WAS AS BASS JUNKIE SAID ,FOAM TIED OR GLUED TO THE HOOK SHANK THEN TRIMMED TO SHAPED.

YOU NEED TO WRAP THE SHANK OF THE HOOK WITH THE THREAD KIND OF COARSLY AND TIE IT OFF. THEN CUT A PIECE OF CRAFT FOAM TO THE SHAPE THAT YOU WANT. NEXT, USE A SMALL NAIL AND PUSH IT THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE SHAPE. NEXT PUSH THE FOAM OVER THE HEAD OF THE HOOK TO MAKE SURE IT WILL FIT. LAST, WET THE THREAD ON THE HOOK SHANK DOWN WITH SUPER GLUE PRETTY GOOD AND SLIDE THE FOAM IN PLACE QUICKLY AND YOUR FINISHED.THE GLUE WILL NOT STICK VERY LONG ON A BARE HOOK SHANK.

THE SECOND WAS TYING THE COARSE BUCK TAIL (OR SPINNING AS IT'S REFERED TO) AROUND THE SHANK AND THEN TRIM TO SHAPE. TROUT PELLETS ARE USUALLY SMALL CYLINDERS SO BOTH WAYS WORK EASILY .BUT, TO MAKE A SPHERE OR BALL IT WOULD BE EASIER FOR ME TO SPIN SOME HAIR AND TRIM TO A BALLTHAN TO SHAPE A BALL FROM FOAM.BUT IF YOU CAN FIND A FOAM BALL MADE IN THE SIZE YOU NEED IN THE KIDS CRAFT SECTION THEN THE FOAM IS EASIER.
