Super User Cgolf Posted January 23, 2016 Super User Posted January 23, 2016 Bass jigs, won some on Twitter and once I started using them I really liked them and of course now have a box full. There are a lot of things out there I won't be getting to anytime soon. Tried wacky rig once, and have never gone back to it. To be honest I really think that not having every technique in the boat with me really helps out my fishing, I know the stuff I have well and don't end up tying on something new every 5 minutes hoping it will work Next year my new I am late to the party baits will be chatter baits and Senkos and Senko like baits. 2 Quote
Primus Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 I was behind the curve regarding the effectiveness of the Kietech Swing Impact as an example that comes to mind . Quote
Hurricane Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 Never have used a keitech swimbait.. bought a couple packs and can't wait to try them. . Quote
primetime Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 The Creme Midget crawler was my bait of choice as a kid...I never got into wacky rigging until maybe last year, although I always like the senko. I think a wacky rig vs. Texas rig makes it 2 different baits. With that said, I know the MJ rig was gaining steam, and I like to fish moving baits, so I have started rigging senko's the same way as the Creme midget crawler and it has become very popular for me. It is almost like fishing a soft spy bait.... Quote
RB 77 Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 Another vote for Chatterbait. Love those things now. Quote
Fishinthefish Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 Still to this day haven't thrown a chatterbait, plan on doing it at least once this summer. 1 Quote
hawgenvy Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I love the chatter bait! How it's all hairy like a jig, it has that cool fluttery blade, and you can stick on all different kinds of enticing trailers. And, man, you can feel that vibrating action just ajitterin' all the way up the line and through the rod. I'd bet all that chatter can call over a fish that's a mile away. I always keep a dark blue one and a white/chart. on hand ready for the toss. Now, one of these days, maybe tomorrow, maybe next year, a fish is actually going to bite the darn thing! 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 24, 2016 Global Moderator Posted January 24, 2016 Still can't catch fish on a dropshot. I go to that party, say "This is stupid, I'm going home", every time. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 HMMMMM...Where to start? My lack of fishing days the past 2-3 years have prevented me from trying new stuff out. When I finally get out and fish, its usually a spur of the moment thing and I end up throwing what I have. It's pretty bad, the Slug-go still does it for me.... 2 Quote

We forget great lures and techniques that are just as good now as then , trying to keep pace with everything new that comes along . Quote

I have way too many hobbies and a summer home that takes up enough disposable income and time. My bass fishing time is limited as it is and if I'm taking the time to go fishing, its for total relaxation. The gear I have work quite nicely thank you very much... There's nothing wrong with getting all the latest and greatest if this is your absolute passion, I have no shame in fishing with inferior gear than the next guy. My priorities are just a little different, no need to defend it, IMO. For me, catching fish on rods and lures I made, make for more satisfaction than any store bought item. I won't lie though, I would love some of the tackle out there now. 1 Quote
Silas Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 For me, Pointers and Visions. I found out by googling the "Best bass baits". The pointer was number ONE of about 50 so I bought some. First time I used them I caught about 15 bass while sitting in one place on a Pointer 100 in Sexy Shad. Next was the chatterbait. Bought a couple of local made Delta chatterbait in white chartreuse with Little Dipper in Sexy Shad and caught a bunch first try. Had to acquire a more M/H Rod to cast them so bought a Dobyns DX 744 for them. Lastly the jig. A local mom and pop tackle store owner said the bass were hitting on a 1/4 Bitsy Bug in Black/blue with a Sapphire Zoom Jr Chunk. Still learning how to pitch it. Bought a Loomis NRX 893 ( because on forums it was highly and rightly touted) to pitch it on. Just NOW I'm looking at drop shot. Still too unsettled water and weather here to get out. Seems strange because "what's old is new again". I used to fish that rig for catfish and crappie maybe 60 years ago. Didn't realize that I was a GENIUS. We also used the NED RIG to catch bass under docks in False River,Louisiana. One thing I will NEVER bring to the party is the A Rig. That's called. SEINING in this area. Distasteful to me! I know it catches fish. Why not get a Salt Water boat Rod and put 20 baits on what you could call tha AAAA RIG and troll around the lake. Sorry:. Rant over. Been a tough weekend!LOL 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 Hmm... Over the years there have been several "game changing" lures. Here are a few off the top of my head: Lucky 13, Jitterbug, Gitzit, Creme Purple Worm, Rapala, Senko and most recently The Rig. You don't need to be the first on the block to buy the "newest & greatest", but once something becomes a recognized "magic lure", it's time to jump on board. These are a few I would recommend RIGHT NOW: Rage Tail Menace, Cut-R, Structure Bug, Rage Craw, Rage Blade, Senko, Fat Ika, Kut Tail, Kreature, Red Eye Shad, Norman Fat Boy, BPS Tender Tube #71, Sworming Hornet/ LFT Live Magic Shad and of course, The Rig. Stay with it! Just like any other technique, It can be the most productive technique in the entire lake at times. It is actually so productive out this way that I forced myself to stop fishing it for a hot minute because it became so much of a crutch for me that my other fishing started to suffer. My best advice is to think of fishing it as an exercise in patience. Channel your inner fishing zen. If you fish it, they will bite. Its not a matter of if, just when... I just picked up a new Stradic and some Sniper so its game on again! Quote
Airman4754 Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I was super late to the swim jig party. I'm such a die hard spinnerbait guy that I never really wanted to throw them. They are awesome in the weeds though. I've never fished a fluke or anything from Keitech either. Quote
Looking for the big one Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I was late to the simple grub and jig head party, but it's been around so long I don't know if that counts. I hear so many people say it was the first thing they ever used and they still use it today, and so recently I tried one from my MTB at a new lake, and after three casts I..... hung it on a tree and broke off. And I didn't catch anything that day :P . Quote

It does excell there keeping the bait off the bottom out of the gunk. Other then that in deeper water, cranks are just more efficient and I have zeroed on DS, maybe I should try it some more next year on some deeper structure and build some confidence in it by not getting zeroed lol. 1 hour ago, Looking for the big one said: I was late to the simple grub and jig head party, but it's been around so long I don't know if that counts. They have accounted for fish of all sizes, not just dinks. Great swim jig trailers too. I always carry a Plano guide series 3700 sized double decker box filled with just grubs and tubes wherever I go, the old baits still rule. Quote

papajoe222 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Drop shotting. I put a box together with everything I needed a couple of seasons ago, caught a nice bass under tough conditions the first time I tried it, but haven't opened the box since. Quote
Jake the Cake Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 Chalk another vote up for chatterbaits (still haven't bought/used one) and also learned drop shot this year (although I consider a bobber and minnow the same principle - suspended presentation - just different way to go about it). More importantly, I just bought my first baitcaster a couple weeks ago (I'm 30) and officially used it for the first time this weekend. Then I realized trying to learn a baitcaster in 30 degree weather with frozen hands is not the way to go about it. That setup has been put away for spring time fishing, which is also the amount of time it will take me to undo this bird's nest. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 25, 2016 Super User Posted January 25, 2016 Chatterbaits. I started using them two years ago. Quote
