Most versatile crankin' rod

Would a 7 foot medium bass pro crankin stick be able to handle square bills and crankbaits that dive to around 10 feet? Would a medium heavy be better for doing both?

Good question.  I was thinking of getting one also. They are also mostly moderate action.  I was wondering also if that action will work for what you're looking for. I'm sure some more experienced members will reply.

Depends on the weight of the baits that you think you are going to toss. If you think you want to toss down to 1/4 oz., the medium might be a better choice. If the lightest bait you'll toss is 3/8 oz. or heavier, then the medium-heavy will end up being more versatile, especially if you only have a single cranking rod and want the option of tossing heavier, deeper diving  cranks.

I have BPS Crankin' Sticks in ML, M, and MH powers and if I could only have one rod ...it would be the MH.

I haven't used the BPS crankin' rods, but I throw square bills on a M/M rod and it handles them great and can work on baits that run around 10 feet ok. A MH/M would be better suited for them. If I had to pick just one, I'd go with the MH/M as it should handle both just fine.

Depends also whether you'll be fishing vegetation. Some power in the rod helps a lot there.

I completely agree. I'm looking for versatile cranking a rod. Not sure which I'll end up buying. I'd like to be around $100.00 so I'm patiently waiting for a sale. 

I like the IKE power rods, I've heard the Delay rods are like jelly. That's a turn off. 

Not sure if it's true. If it isn't the IKE would be high on my list.

I don't have an Ike series, but I do have a 7' medium Veritas I cranking rod and compared to the St Croix rods I'm used to, is very soft and lighter in power.  That said, It's a great rod for shallow Crankbaits.  For deeper running cranks (over 10'), I'm likely going to pick up a moderate action MH St Croix in the 7'6 range.

You could get away with it. The crankin stick is a composite. So if your throwing around cover like laydowns. A medium might not let ya pull the fish away from it.

IMHO the most versatile cranking rod...........is rod you can do other things with besides just crank. For fishing things like squarebills, lipless cranks and medium depth cranks around cover, a good MH or M power, fast action rod will fish those kinds of cranks just fine. If the cover is grass, they will be better, IMHO ,than any cranking rod, and as an added bonus you can fish jigs, plastics and other stuff with them too.

I just got myself a Dobyns Fury 705CB just before we got hard water and from the little bit of testing I've put it through I can see it being a great rod. Its my first "cranking" rod but i only ever carry one baitcaster and one spinning rod when I fish so versatility is key. I'd definitely check out some of their rods if your not set on a BPS Crankin' Stick.
