Robertqq Posted January 21, 2016 Posted January 21, 2016 Hello, For small size largemouth & smallmouth Bass, and Crappies, do you find for Mepps Aglias that a treble or a single hook seems to work better ? Why ? Assume bare hooks in either case; no trailers How about dressed Aglias vs non. ? Why do you think so ? Regards, Bob Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 21, 2016 Super User Posted January 21, 2016 Hi Bob, Though I haven't fished one it what seems like forever, this one in #4 was always a solid producer for both large & smallmouth bass. As a teen growing up in New England, I used to throw this and a red & white Dardevle Imp spoon almost exclusively. A-Jay Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 21, 2016 Super User Posted January 21, 2016 For bass size 4 or 5 smaller sizes are too small, I prefer dressed ( squirrel hair ) for open water and for cover like wood I use single hook dressed with a tiny T-exposed rigged grub. 1 Quote
WI_Angler1989 Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 I fish for smallmouth and largemouth with an Aglia a lot. It's been a go to lure for me ever since I first started fishing avidly. I've run the gauntlet of sizes and now exclusive use the #3 size in brown fur with silver or copper blades depending on the sky. Sometimes a silver blade, red and white fur does the trick for me to but I favor the brown dressed. The #3 is the perfect size for me. It casts like a rocket, is easy to fish shallow or deeper (the heavier sizes run deeper and are tough to use shallow) and I've caught smallies, largemouth, pike, muskie, crappie, catfish, walleye and perch on it. Here's one I caught on a white and red #3 last fall. Quote
gotasnag Posted January 22, 2016 Posted January 22, 2016 Travel for work, so usually fishing new water. #3 white dressed Mepps has been my go to spinner since mid 70s. Tossing them near cover with can get expensive though. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 24, 2016 Global Moderator Posted January 24, 2016 A #2 or #3 dressed Agila was one of my favorite baits as a kid because it would catch anything. I liked the natural squirrel tail with a chartreuse blade. 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 I used to use a #3 Mepps but upsized to a #4. The larger profile still catches the smaller fish, but also appeals to larger bass as well. I quit using the dressed versions. They cost more and the plain versions catch just as many fish. I also found that the dressed models were harder to clean when you got weeds on them. Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted January 24, 2016 Super User Posted January 24, 2016 #4's are by far my best size with an occasional #3 mixed in. I found this interesting, here's what different blades sound like under water: http://www.mepps.com/resources/lure-sounds/ 1 Quote

RB 77 Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 I have never used a single hook Aglia, but the "regular" treble hook bait is my all time best producer for Trout AND bass as far as inline spinners go. I like the undressed, gold blade. Quote
Allen Der Posted January 24, 2016 Posted January 24, 2016 for bass and pike I always use a #4 or #5 dressed agilia with treble hook. I like the firetiger color. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted January 25, 2016 Super User Posted January 25, 2016 Number 3 Anglia Dressed. Silver blade, dressed grey treble hook Gold blade, dressed brown treble hook When the bite is on like my lure is a amusement ride with the number 3's and the stops dead. Bump up to the number 3 or number 4 Anglia. I notice the bigger fish move in to see what the smaller fish are feeding on. With the bigger Anglia the fish got bigger. mepps offers a assortment of Anglias for bass in one package. I bought this assortment first when I started out bass fishing. Fishing the swamp with tree trunks one night the bass feeding frenzy was on in the evening. We near the combination bridge, dam. Casting into the swamp were had doubles after doubles me and my son. I gave him the red/white one pictured above here. I was throwing the silver blade, grey dressed. I have no clue as to how many bass we caught. Dont forget the strike king inline spinner too we use the silver blade, dressed black. Number 3 of course. To me it's a black gnat. 1 Quote
Surfcaster Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 #3 and #4 Aglias some with silver blades and some with gold. Bare hooks have always done the best for me, but I do not fish them very often now. The local fish gurus swear by the Mepps inline spinner. They all have their favorite size and style; they call it the forgotten lure. I asked them why you do not see it much anymore in the South and they said because no pros pitch (advertise) for them. Super User bigbill Posted January 26, 2016 Super User Posted January 26, 2016 All I can say is they work for me. It's not some wiz fangled new bait. Neither is the old school rubber worm? But they still work. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted January 27, 2016 Super User Posted January 27, 2016 2 years ago in clear Canadian waters, the Mepps 5 treble was the best lure by far. Silver blades, treble hook and no fur. Second best was red/white/gold in 4 or 5. 100 fish per day. Yep, they still work ... Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted January 27, 2016 Super User Posted January 27, 2016 I never did well with the Agila bait, but when I was younger the thunder bug was my go to inline. Tried the blue fox vibrax series and blanked on those too. Not sure if they still make the bug, it had an odd shaped blade. Quote
Tucson Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Anyone using a swivel on these? I've found that they twist the line up pretty badly without one. Quote

That and a steel leader if you got toothy critters swimming in your waters. Pike love inline spinners. 1 Quote

X2 on the pike. Every single time I've used an Aglia, I've caught pike. It doesn't even matter where: lakes, rivers, streams, water I'd never caught a pike in......they hammer it. Its like it ticked them off! 1 Quote

I kill the trout on a #0 or #1 thunder bug. havent tried the bigger sizes though 1 Quote
thomas15 Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 I've used mepps in-lines for trout but never for bass. I guess it's time to give it a try. Quote
