Super User smalljaw67 Posted January 17, 2016 Super User Posted January 17, 2016 I posted a thread asking for some information on a bait I plan to get and A-Jay was very helpful but he was the only one and it got me thinking about this. The bait I was needing help with was a Bomber Fat Free Shad Deep Diving Square Bill, I have the regular Fat Free Shad but never got the square bill. Anyway, I'm looking at holes in my medium diving crankbait arsenal and it seems most of my medium divers are made up of older classics that are still sold. Bomber Model 7A, Deep Flat A, Fat Free Shad as I had mentioned along with the Storm Wiggle Warts and Rapala DT Flat 7, DT-6, DT-10 and other baits like this. Even my newer ones seem old like the Bagley Sunny B and the Balsa Shad, when I actually compared my medium diving boxes to my shallow diving ones, it was like being in a time warp, but then looking at the newer stuff, there aren't many medium divers that were put out that seem good to try other than the Yo-Zuri baits which are my newest medium divers. Am I alone in this or are there some of you who are also caught in a time warp of medium diving baits? 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 17, 2016 Super User Posted January 17, 2016 Interesting thread ~ My medium depth arsenal includes more newer than older baits. In the clearer water here I seem to benefit from a longer cast. The older baits in this category a little lighter than many of the newer models - 1/4 - 3/8 as compared to 1/2 & 5/8's. So the heavier weight (and usual weight transfer system that come in today's baits) has equated to a few more bites for me. I use a mix of 6th Sense Crush 250MD Crankbaits, Duo Realis M65 Crankbaits, Livingston Lures Howeller Dream Master Classics, Lucky Craft "Skeet Reese" SKT DR Rattle In Crankbaits, Lucky Craft LC 2.0 D10 Crankbaits, Lucky Craft LC Silent Deep Diver 3.5DD Crankbaits, Spro John Crews Little John MD Crankbait, Strike King Pro Model 3XD Crankbaits, Strike King Pro Model 5 Series Crankbaits. Squarebill cranks are not included here. A-Jay 1 Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted January 17, 2016 Super User Posted January 17, 2016 Having only really getting into Bass fishing in the last ten years, the Norman Deep Little N has always been in my box and is probably the first one I toss still today. I can't say though that I know how long it has been around. Quote
thomas15 Posted January 17, 2016 Posted January 17, 2016 Shallow and medium cranks used to be my confidence bait when pounding the shore 15-20 years ago. Now I cannot get even a hit on them from a boat in a clear deep lake. I'm sure it not the bait rather presentation and location. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted January 17, 2016 Super User Posted January 17, 2016 I still use and seek out older baits simply because I know they work . I use a lot of Bomber model A's , Fat Free Shad / Fingerling, Rapala Fat Raps , Rebel Deep wee R's , Norman Deep Little N's , Wiggle Warts and my favorite shallow runner the Rogers Big Jim . The Big Jim has a subtle action and the local bass just charge it often taking it deep . I would like to find more of those . 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 17, 2016 Super User Posted January 17, 2016 Crankbaits or deep diving plugs as we called them can become very addictive to purchase. Outside of buying few Yo- Zuri lipless hologram 3D Shad lures, haven't surcombed to the urge to buy more, having too many already. My go medium divers are Bomber 7 series, Norman DD15, Rapala Fat Raps and old Wiggle Warts. Don't own any newer square bills, still fish with Big O's. I do update the treble hooks! Tom 1 Quote

Super User Bankbeater Posted January 18, 2016 Super User Posted January 18, 2016 Whenever I can find some Big O's on sale I buy them. They have caught fish for me for 40 years. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 18, 2016 Global Moderator Posted January 18, 2016 Any time I come across some reasonably priced pre-rap warts, I buy them. Quote
Buckeye Ron Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 I still fish primarily with older Bagley or Sisson crankbaits, even though I have a lot of Strike King and Bomber baits. The medium running Bagley's are great for catching bass in the 5-9' range. As long as what I have keeps producing fish I'll stay with them. 1 Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted January 18, 2016 Super User Posted January 18, 2016 John Crews is an old-crank nut, if you follow him on facebook he posts up all his favorite old plugs. Pretty interesting baits. Quote

Pretty interesting baits. This^^^^^ !!! That statement, this is why I made this post, and that is because I'm not really an old crank type of angler, I don't go looking for them. I like to use newer baits, some end up as keepers while others end up never being used again. This past season I did well on cranks and I lost a few of my mid depth and it forced me to look at my arsenal in more detail. I'll be trying some of the new Berkley stuff this season but I'll still be chucking out old classics as well, thanks for the responses guys, I just need to realize that while I pay attention to the newest trends, I'm still an old school angler at heart. tander Posted January 18, 2016 Posted January 18, 2016 Just about my whole tacklebox is older cranks. I have mostly 70's, 80's Poes, Bagley, Bomber, Bandits, and even have some Strike King Spence Scouts. How many remember the Scouts? All these baits caught fish then, they will still catch fish now. My favorite are the Poe's RC1 and 2, and the 300 series. 2 Quote

Some of the baby bass ones have this chartruese paint on them to hide the cracks and such...the 90s people used what they had. Quote

That Bagleys Diving B in Baby Bass with the chartreuse belly is one of my all time favorites . I have had several and destroyed them all . I still have one with big hunks of paint missing . Quote
