What brand/kind of football jig should i get for bass in Greenville, SC?

I'm a few hundred miles north, but this much, I can tell you.  If there was truly one best football jig, it would be the only one on the market.  I'd go into a local tackle shop, or better yet, several, and check out  their display of football jigs.  Then go with the more popular brands.

Which are the more popular?  The ones with the biggest displays.  It's just like the shelves in a food store.  The better selling brands will have more space on the shelves.  What's the most popular Campbell soup?  Most likely tomato with chicken noodle and chicken with rice close behind.

Markets are not going to devote much shelf space to a product that doesn't move quickly.

The same is true of other types of stores.

The faster a bait moves, the more space it will get on the shelves.  If several types/brands of jigs have a lot of display space, it means they sell well, and they sell well because they work well.

Talk to the employees in the fishing department.  They should be able to provide some guidance.

Well, as long as it has a quality hook (Gammie, Owner, Mustad, etc.) in it, its all good. I have some new tungsten models that are getting ready to go...

Just a guess it sounds like you may be new to jig fishing?

My suggestion is to use GYCB plain black football jig, wire weed gaurd, with either Owner or Gamaktsu hook and use GYCB twin tail Hula grub #301 as a trailer.

If you want a pre made skirted football jig there are lots of choices, Siebert, the site sponsor, makes excellent jigs at reasonable prices..

Siebert makes a great jig, but for football jigs, Jewel is by far my favorite. Comes through cover really well and has a good hook.

Where do you use a football jig?

The football head was designed to keep the jig hook upright so it doesn't roll over.

The football head was designed to help the jig to crawl over rocks and not snag.

The football jig was designed to be cast and retrieved along the bottom, similar to a T-rigged  worm.

The advantage a football head jig has over the Arkie head jig is less lead behind the hook eye, increasing the distance detween the head and hook point, this puts a jig hook point further back in the basses mouth improving hook set to strike ratio when casting jigs a distance.

* upright hook

* less snags in rocks.

* longer hook shank

The disadvantage a football jig has verses a Arkie jig are;

Tends to snag brush and aquatic cover, doesn't go through heavy cover.

Works great where it's intended to be used, poor design for heavy cover.

A jig is only a good as the hook used.

Pick one that works with your tackle. If you are using braid or heavy line over 12lb, you'll want a football head with stout hook, if you use mono or fluorocarbon around 10lb and 12lb line over rocks in deep water, you may want one with a lighter wire hook and light weed guard.
