stkbassn Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Okay, been reading a lot of guys saying shakey heads on M spinning rods. Today I was watching Facts of Fishing and Dave Mercer was using a ML rod with the jackall jig head and flick shake worm. I also read another pro saying ML is necessary to fish it effectively. I realize a ML rod will limit me to bait options ...Im guessing ned rig will work too. Opinions, suggested rods, experiences... thanks guys. I have been considering the ML 6'8 Zodias. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted January 11, 2016 Super User Posted January 11, 2016 I fish the 4.8 flickshakes with a 1/8 oz head on a ML rod. I feel the rod loads better at casting the lighter weights than a medium would. Not sure about the Ned Rig as I have used them only a few times but again the size of the weight used would be the deciding factor when looking at ML vs M. 1 Quote
Drew03cmc Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I'm using the 4.8 with 3/32 or 1/8 and Ned rigs this year on a 7' ML Powell. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 11, 2016 Global Moderator Posted January 11, 2016 I fish Ned rigs, DS, Keitechs, grubs, small shakyheads all on a 6' 10" ML/XF LTB with braid. I've used it for wacky rigs with no issues too. 2 Quote
Hogsticker Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Depends on the particular rod. With the Zodias, the medium light would serve you best. I fish mine on a Medium light Phenix K2. Loading characteristics are most important when fishing light baits. 3 Quote
tander Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I believe Med./light is the way to go. I fish the Ned Rig, small shakey heads, on my St Croix Avid MLXF and it works really well. 1 Quote
stkbassn Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 Awesome guys!! Thanks for all of the replies. Sounds like M/L is the ticket ! . I do think it needs to be added to my fishing. It's simple and effective from all I've seen so far. Pretty awesome! I've seen some good rod suggestions too so thanks for that. I will look around. I need to try to keep rod and reel around $150-$175 as a combo if possible but looking around it doesn't sound like I'm getting off that cheap! LOL. Combo suggestions? 20 size reel ? Also, I'm a mono guy so I was planning to use 6-8#. Is there something better that you guys would recommend? I do not use braid and won't. Thanks again everyone! Quote

Even their cheapest President is a mighty fine reel. I like the 30 size reel with Sunline 7 or 8# test Sniper fc.I have the Pflueger Supreme XT with 7# fc, love it. 1 Quote

You could pick up the previous generation of St. Croix Mojo 6'10" ML/XF for $89 + free shipping from their bargain bin, otherwise their new ones built on a more sensitive blank are $120. You could match either up with a Pfluger President and be under or right on budget. 1 Quote
stkbassn Posted January 11, 2016 Author Posted January 11, 2016 Nice, thanks guys. I realize the Zodias I want is going to blow my budget on this combo so I am more inclined to check into your suggestions. I forgot all about the President. What a great reel for the money that one is! Thanks again! Quote

poisonokie Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 I use both light and med light / reg fast rods for this technique with great results. Couple those rods with high vis braided line and there is no missing the bite. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 It depends on the bait and jig total weight and then the Rod makers definition of M & ML. I'm moving more toward ML rods for all my spinning applications. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 11, 2016 Super User Posted January 11, 2016 Depends on the size weight. I use both medium, and ML. Quote

It seems I tend to also fish worms on a flick shake head on the ML and senkos on a M. Heck, I even use a MH rod when I step up to "power flickin" 1 Quote
stkbassn Posted January 12, 2016 Author Posted January 12, 2016 All great replies guys. Much appreciated! I'll take a look around and see what I can put together! I think I will pick up the President and then decide on the rod...tempted to go Zodias 6'8 ML or might go with the $89 deal on the Mojo to ease my way into this style. I also considered the 2nd Gen *** 6'10 ML XF.. anyone have one or opinion? Looks good. Not expensive .. Quote
zdunham Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Depends on the size of the shakyhead. I might use a ML, or I might use a M if it is a little big heavier/bigger. Quote
John G Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I use a L powered casting rod with 7# Sniper. Quote
stkbassn Posted January 12, 2016 Author Posted January 12, 2016 Thanks all. I ordered the jackall weedless head I saw on TW. I believe it's the one Mercer was using on the Flick shake...1/8 oz Quote
Super User Raul Posted January 12, 2016 Super User Posted January 12, 2016 Which rod ( power ), which type of reel, which line diameter, which jighead weight depends on how you want to make your presentation, that: On 11 de enero de 2016 at 10:03 PM, stkbassn said: I also read another pro saying ML is necessary to fish it effectively. Super User WRB Posted January 12, 2016 Super User Posted January 12, 2016 With a 2 power or ML spinning rod a size 1000 reel is lighter weight with nearly the same IPT as the 2000 reels and with 4-8 lb FC you don't need a heavier gear housing. Tom Quote

Tom Don't want to hijack the post, but hopefully this could bring some good insight. I'm glad you mentioned this. I recently purchased a size 25 Quantum EXO spinning reel to put on a Powell light power rod for drop shotting and other light techniques. The store I bought it from actually sent me a size 15 instead by accident. I'm wanting this to be a light setup, but I initially went with the 25, giving up the oz. lighter 15 in exchange for a heavier drag. I think it was 6 lbs. of drag vs. 16 lbs. of drag. I've seen a few people here talk about the smaller reel size being just fine and a worth while compromise for the gain of less weight. I decided to just keep the 15, and I'm hoping I don't regret it. Like others have said, I'm normally a die hard Pflueger fan,(I have a supreme mg and a supreme XT that I absolutely love.) but I couldn't pass up the 1/2 price deals on the EXO going around. Just wondered WRB's and anyone else's opinion on this matter since we are talking light spinning rod/reel stuff here. Quote
Sheepdog Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 Also wanted to mention, in case a deal can still be found elsewhere, TW had the Powell Max 3D L and ML spinning rods for $99, and I think the Inferno's were around $76. Killer deal for either one of those rods. I know that sale ended like 4 days ago, but just wanted to put that out there as food for thought. I have a St. Croix Legend Tournament 7' med. spinning rod that is a DREAM, and I'd put my two Powell spinning rods right there with it. Lots of good rods out there in your price range. Find a good deal. Good luck and TIGHT LINES! Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 13, 2016 Super User Posted January 13, 2016 My 2 power or ML spinning reels are Shimano Stradic 1000's, they balance with the rods I use. The maximum drag a ML rod can withstand is about 3 to 4 lbs of pulling force, your reel has 6 lbs of drag capability! I use 6 lb Sunline Super Sniper with the 1000 series reels and set the drag at 2 lbs. I set my 5 power baitcasting jig worm rod-reel using 10 to 14 lb Sunline Shooter at 3 to 5 lbs of drag, more than enough to control any bass. Tom 1 Quote

Yes, however the flick shake technique was intended to be a finesse oriented tactic. The jig heads Jackall designed to go with the worm come in the heaviest weight of 1/8 Oz. Nothing wrong with strapping a half ounce on it if you're fishing deep water, but again it was designed as a finesse technique and I believe that was the intent of the Ops question. I certainly wouldn't fish that half ounce rig on a light action rod, nor would I fish 1/8 Oz on a heavy rod. Quote
