grizzly1654 Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 I'm in the process of planning my first rod build and I'm not sure about the reel seat size. The rod blank is going to be a S782-MHX. I'm planning on getting the Fuji sk2 split reel seat but I'm not sure about the size. The sk2 is listed in 2 sizes, 16 and 17. I tried searching the web about reel seat sizes and i got a lot of mixed results. I read some say to match the reel seat size to the size reel you plan on using. And others say to match the reel seat size to the diameter of the rod blank you are using. Can someone educate me on the correct application of reel seat sizes please? Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted January 10, 2016 Super User Posted January 10, 2016 When they say match it to the blank, they are referring to the blank exposed style of seat like a Fuji ACS or ECS. Either 16mm or 17 mm will work for you. It's a matter of preference and what is comfortable to you. Quote
grizzly1654 Posted January 12, 2016 Author Posted January 12, 2016 Thanks. I figured since it is a split reel seat just about any size reel would fit it. Quote
Super User MickD Posted January 12, 2016 Super User Posted January 12, 2016 l have no experience with these seats , so if I'm off base, someone please correct me. I think with skeleton seats on spinning rods there is no ergonomic difference between size 16 and 17 since where your hand resides is all blank, no seat. And either size will fit any reasonable reel size. The major consideration is the relationship between the blank OD and the seat component ID. Of course the blank has to fit through the bore, and after that it is just a matter of a larger or smaller bushing; With other types of spin seats the larger sizes will weigh more and fit more hands better. I prefer 17 as a good compromise. 16 is too small except on the lightest rods. On casting rods the part of the seat that mates to the grip is the same size on 16 and 17. Only the bore is different diameter. And the bore diameter of the forward component will be different between a 16 and 17. I would select the seat size that allows me to use the thinnest bushing to fill the difference between the seat bore and the blank. (On both spinning and casting SKELETON seats. OK guys/gals, did I get it right? Seat dimensions are at http://anglersresource.net/SK2SplitReelSeats.aspx Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted January 12, 2016 Super User Posted January 12, 2016 get the size 17 Quote
breazy Posted January 13, 2016 Posted January 13, 2016 16 or 17 refers to the barrel inside diameter wgere the threaded portion is. Sizing will be dependant upon where ypu want the reel seat to land on the blank. Some sizes are only available on the 16, and some only on the 17. Consult the rods dimensions for that descision. Im in the middle of building an mhx873 mh rod w/ a 13.5 id size 16 reel seat. Quote
