Super User FryDog62 Posted January 8, 2016 Super User Posted January 8, 2016 What line do you use for skipping docks with spinning gear? I know some guys that use a main line of 15-20 lb fluoro for abrasion resistance. Others that use braid and tip with lighter fluoro/mono leader to give lighter baits like Senkos, tubes and more realistic and slow sink rate. I skip mostly Fat Ika's, tubes and Senkos - What's your preferred set up? Quote

DTack Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 Just now, FryDog62 said: Curious - as a main line or just as a leader? I apologize, as a main line. Straight 7lb fluorocarbon. It can get a little sketchy around some docks with 6+ lb fish, but I still trust it. Great line that I have just built a TON of confidence in. I just can't fish a bait that sinks on braid very well, I've never been able to get used to it personally. Quote
Logan S Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 On spinning gear I use 10 lb Power Pro with a 10 lb Flouro leader. With a 6'10" M/XF rod, any fish up to about 3.5 lbs is a simple crank-to-the-boat fight. On bigger fish I'm more careful, but the fight is still relatively quick. I generally prefer flouro over braid for most things, but in this specific case (skipping on spinning tackle) braid is the better choice for me...I get stronger main line without management issues on 2000-sized spinning reels. It's usually relatively short casts and shallower water, so none of the other braid/flouro comparisons come into play as much IMO. I always use a flouro leader for abrasion resistance, I make it a little longer than normal (8-10 feet or so). On casting gear I use straight 15 lb flouro. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted January 8, 2016 Super User Posted January 8, 2016 In the past I had went with 6 lb Trilene 100% fluoro and their XL version as well. Switched it up this year and tried braid instead and I think I'll be going back to fluoro next year. It can be tough trying to work a big fish out from under a dock with small line, but if you take your time and don't horse it, there's a ton less break offs. 1 Quote
Jake the Cake Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I've been using Berkley Vanish for both my Crappie and Bass rigs (4lb and 10lb respectively, Both spinning reels) and they seem to skip around docks just fine. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted January 8, 2016 Author Super User Posted January 8, 2016 I'm leaning towards sticking with braid + 6-8 lb fluoro leader as in the past... but how about 8-10 lb Trilene XT or Yozuri Hybrid? Would be tougher abrasion-wise but I'm not sure if it would allow the plastics to fall/sink the way they should .. ?? Quote

Personally 10lb has always caused management issues for me on spinning tackle. 8lb works however! It has been a while though and I have thought about going up to 10lb fluoro in the Sniper just to see if it would handle ok since it is so thin. It just comes down to me having a lot of confidence in the 7 and liking the line overall from all aspects. Quote

Seemed like overkill to me but they caught a lot of fish too -- Quote

I dont use or know of one person who uses 15-20 lb. fluoro on spinning gear. i have used 20-30 lb braid ,possibly with a 15 -20 lb fluoro leader for what your describing. This for me is usually done with casting gear. 5 hours ago, FryDog62 said: Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted January 8, 2016 Super User Posted January 8, 2016 On spinning gear, I skip with 20lb braid. Tied direct to the bait in dirty water, and with an 8lb fluoro leader in gin clear water. 2 Quote
