Sandhillcrab Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I have a st croix avid and might get another one. But.. I love the rods. Is there a better rod out there for cheaper? I like st croix a lot but there costing me a bit to much. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 6, 2016 Super User Posted January 6, 2016 Look at the Eyecon Series. I have a couple spinning rods from that line, and they're great for "bass" fishing even though they are marketed as "walleye" rods. Price is right, SCII graphite, and nice components. 2 Quote
smallie.mike Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Check out the new mojo bass rods with sclll graphite. Same material as the avid blanks but they aren't made in the USA and are 80 bucks cheaper. 3 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 6, 2016 Super User Posted January 6, 2016 Avids are SCIII, not quite the same...they are lighter, and a little crisper feeling. 1 Quote
Cgrinder Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Hard to improve upon the Avid for under $200. I enjoy the Shimano Zodias at that price but it's a smaller lineup and the warranty is not as good. Plus we're all sick of black with red highlights. 1 Quote
Fishinthefish Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I've become a big fan of the Gander Mountian elite series rods. 2 Quote

The NEW mojo rods are sclll, same material as the avids. If you look at the weight on the st.croix site most of the mojo bass rods are actually lighter than the similar model avids. http://stcroixrods.com/products/freshwater/mojo-bass 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 6, 2016 Super User Posted January 6, 2016 Ahh, didn't know that. Cool. 1 Quote

I've got 2 of them already and will definitely be buying more. They're the same blanks they used for the rage rods without the crappy guides and handles. 1 Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted January 6, 2016 Super User Posted January 6, 2016 St. Croix is tough to beat. I see you aren't super close, but if you make a trek to Park Falls, they sell their seconds in their store that are heavily discounted. Most of their seconds look better than other manufacturer's first's, and it cosmetic blemishes. Something like tiny air bubbles in a clear coat, or their logo is slightly crooked would make a rod a second there. Quote
A fisher Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Looked at mojo bass rods, but went with a fenwick hmg Quote

bennettkolls Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 If you have a Dicks sporting goods near you check it out. Just picked up a glass mojo bass for $52. Retails for $130-140 on TW. It was marked down to $70 and all fishing stuff is on sale for 25% off. I don't know when the sale ends, but there is a lot of tackle on sale too so its worth it even if the rod selection isn't great. 1 Quote

Now I have to make another trip to check out the sale....Thanks! Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted January 7, 2016 Super User Posted January 7, 2016 As a random side note, I just saw that the Lindners recently signed with St. Croix. They were still using Quantum reels but with St. Croix LT rods. I thought that was cool, for who knows what reason. Quote

Super User tomustang Posted January 7, 2016 Super User Posted January 7, 2016 The new MOJO is the best answer. 1 Quote

GoCougs14 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 With the avid x and mojo being built on the same blank it seems pretty hard to justify the 70 extra dollars. Other than the slightly cheaper guides, warranty, and country of origin, is there anything Im missing? Quote

They have different lengths and actions than the avids. The mojo blanks and rods are made in mexico while the avid blanks and rods are built in the usa. They are great rods for the price and I will buy more of them, but I'll also buy more avids. 1 Quote

SMITTY0045 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 The new Mojo Bass use the same material for blanks as the Avid, so you may be able to get a similar rod for much cheaper. If you are considering going with another brand, I would look into the Daiwa Tatula or maybe a Falcon Lowrider. Both of the rods are great and they are cheaper than the Avids. I'd look into those Quote
