Turkey sandwich Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 So, I was thinking about how much easier it is to find information now versus 15 years ago. Forums, youtube, etc are super helpful, but most fishing videos are more commercials than useful information and a lot of what's shaped my fishing off the water has come from books. I think it would be helpful to post a list of books and some notes on them. Some me that have helped me: In-Fisherman Largemouth and Smallmouth Handbook and Strategies these are both good introductions to seasonal patterns, lake types, and breaking down water. They're pretty reader friendly, and Al Lindner makes a lot of complicated things seem pretty simple. Smallmout Bass in Streams : Second addition by John Tertuliani mostly fly oriented, but provides a lot of quality info about locating smallmouth in streams, how to present in current, and a just different perspective that's been really helpful in understanding streams. Why Fish Don't See Your Lures: How Fish Vision Affects Intelligent Tackle Color Selection by Greg Vinall - the bulk of the book is about color visibility at depth, in different water clarities, etc.. If you want to know what colors to fish, in what light conditions, at what depth, etc this is a great book. Fishing The Big D by James McKay - cool book that breaks down the sections of the Delaware River, but also gives a TON of regional history. These are a few that are sitting in front of me. Anyone else have any favorites? Quote

Super User soflabasser Posted January 6, 2016 Super User Posted January 6, 2016 I enjoyed reading books from Larry Larsen,he is a well known expert on both trophy largemouth bass and trophy peacock bass. One of his best books is called "Trophy Bass an Anglers Guide". 1 Quote

I have Tim Holshlag's book. It's a pretty good intro River fishing for smallmouth, and it's covers all the basics. The In-Fisherman handbooks for large and smallmouth have been around in various forms for quite a while. Some of the techniques and gear referenced are a bit outdated, but most of the material is still really good. I'd suggest them for anyone who wants to go beyond the basics. Quote
largemouth01 Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Largemouth bass patterns by Babe winkelman and Bass a handbook of strategies by al lindner have helped me the most. Quote

lo n slo Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Fishing North Carolina by Mike Marsh i realize this is regionally specific but it is a must read for those of us in and around NC. Quote
Super User Sam Posted January 8, 2016 Super User Posted January 8, 2016 Turkey, let me add this, not to rain on your parade, but to make a profound statement: The largemouth bass is the most studied fish in the world. And we still do not fully understand their habits and lives. Education will help you, but until we can actually see through the bass' eyes and join them for a week swimming and feeding all of the books, DVDs, TV shows and seminars can only provide information, myths, right and wrong information and guess work from above the water. Kim Stricker has done a fantastic job with this Hook N Look series. May I suggest purchasing the entire set of all of his years on TV and sit back and watch them as the snow falls in Center City this winter. Kim and Danny's photography and underwater studies has added a new touch to that little green monster that humbles us on a daily basis. Happy New Year! 1 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted January 27, 2016 Super User Posted January 27, 2016 Another vote here for "Spoonplugging" by Perry. Suffice it to say that, if you haven't read it, you are missing out. 2 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Had anyone read KVD's book? It's always full price on Amazon, never the usual discount 99% of books get, so wondering if it's worth it? Quote
MFBAB Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 For TN guys, there's a really good one covering most of the reservoirs statewide: The Compleat Tennessee Angler You don't have to be from TN to benefit from this, it's basically a seasonal guide to fishing TN for multiple species, but they go into a lot of detail w guides and fishermen in the area about techniques that will translate to a lot of other water across the country. This pic shows about 2/3 of my fishing books, the others are scattered around the house. The magazine pile is really embarrassing 2 Quote
blckshirt98 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Dang, nice collection of fishing books! 1 Quote

RyanFishing Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 My favorite book by far on the largemouth bass is Knowing Bass by Keith Jones. It's a great book more on the anatomy of a bass but also goes into detail on how a bass hears and sees and perceives certain lures in the water. It was super eye opening for me and is probably my favorite book of all time! Quote
FrogFreak Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 I hear all of you about Hook n Look but Kim's laugh drives me crazy. Quote
davecon Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 If you really want an eye opener (or two) get the videos Big Mouth and Big Mouth Forever by Glen Lau. Google him. I have had those videos for years and still watch them frequently. Quote
