TBH I think @k3bass has a decent point. I contributed for years to several other forums, and I know the frustration people (and myself) usually feel and express when someone new logs on and asks a question that has been answered a million times. That's because for them a forum is a tool to obtain information, whereas for us the forum is a hobby, pastime, etc. That new person hasn't seen this topic posted and answered here a billion gazillion times- it's a new thing they're considering and desiring information on.

Welcome to the BEST fishing forum... PEROID.  You're the 200,000,000th to ask this question, and NOT THE LAST.  Take some time and search this section, you're answer is already here.  

Regardless of your budget, Shimano and Diawa reels have a huge following.  I'd liken them to Toyota and Honda: well built, easy to use, and never let you down.  My first baitcaster was a BPS Pro Qualifier, another hugely popular reel.  I'll call it a Chevy Nova, not fancy, but reliable and easy to set up/use (they also take to custom tuning very well).

As far as rods, I find $99 is a magic number, giving you limitless choices of high quality, light, and sensitive sticks.  Try to handle as many as you can in person.  You'll know a rod's right for you by 'feel'.  I'd start looking at medium-fast, or medium/heavy-fast.

Honestly, I'd look at the Quantum  Kevin Van Dam Baitcast Combo from Walmart @ ~$115.  Use it often, and figure out what you like and don't like about it...  Then, a year from now, use your new experience to spring for a new setup that is "higher end."

Give up some more information about the crank baits you wanna use, are you long bombing deep divers or target casting shallow divers? Need a budget on the rod & one for the reel too. This should help a great deal on feedback..

Glenn has spent much time and money to make this forum a place where bass fishing questions are answered, and there are many here that are interested in answering questions and learning new things.

Asking what inexpensive baitcasting combo to buy is much like asking how high is up. There are countless answers and none of them are right or wrong. It is a question that can't be answered without more information.

Yes....i think good forums such as this should think of all of those things....its great you can use this forum for searching out different topics that have been posted in the past but at the same time, there is the social aspect that anglers like when they get a real response that might lead to new friendships and just shooting the breeze.....If there are not those kinds of conversations then this only becomes a database that eventually gets to be boring.....I like the people who take the time to answer questions or pose different views.....that's what makes things interesting.....

Sorry if my response offended you.  But after 20 years of running this site and seeing this same question posted several times a day without saying a word.... then one comes along to the tune of "What's the best car? I don't want to spend much. Go!", I lost it.  The question is way too broad to even attempt to answer.  So I gave it a funny response. LOL!

 On more than a few occasions, I've been guilty of being pretty short (without trying to be funny) when responding to some of the more repeated inquiries.  It felt hard not to.

I think the challenge lies in that there is just So MUCH information here that not only is there an initial learning curve to access it but it's even tough to describe to a new member just how much there is to offer.

I get irritated with this kind of question too.  To me it's sheer laziness on the part of the person asking the question.  (I'm not speaking to the OP specifically.)
  You have this wonderful, massive resource with more information than you could possibly ever read and you're not willing to read through a few pages to try to find an answer?  Who knows what other information you might learn along the way.   The lack of a willingness to do a little research is astonishing to me.

Well, to the OP's defense, I'll admit that the sheer volume of info available to us is so immense as to be intimidating sometimes...  Coupling this with the fact that quite a few questions usually seem to be answered by a flurry of input from "brand X" prostaffers, and it becomes rather tough to truly figure out a consensus from the legions of unbiased average-Joe bass enthusiasts...  Ergo, it's not so easy to search any forums' Search app and hear from unbiased folks willing to share first-hand experience.  Not to stir the pot at all, but I'd point out as an example a few threads on Denali rods and *** rods I recently stumbled upon...  In both cases, it's becoming too customary to see a barrage of input from prostaffers with these companies -- and while I personally feel that these two particular companies offer excellent products, all of the "prostaffer" / fanboy advice really doesn't assist anyone in their decisions -- on the contrary, the biased replies really hurt all folks involved.  I'm glad that there are new folks interested in our sport, and I'm also glad there are enough unbiased folks on this particular forum who are willing to toss out some general recommendations on these subjects...  And once an unbiased guy tosses out some options, then I agree that the onus is on the poster to do as much homework as possible via the Search function to learn about the items and make an educated decision.  I'm not sure I added much to this discussion; however, just wanted to chime in with my thoughts.
