What are some good casting rods for small top water poppers like 1/4oz. Rico's or Yellow Magic's? I need one that will load well with the small lures.

                                                                       Thanks

X2. I have a St croix avid X 6'8 MXF and absolutely love it. Perfect for small topwater a and Jerkbaits!

Before I went custom, I used a Browning 6'6" Matrix paired with a Diawa Sol. Med. power and the action was between fast and mod.fast.

For casting rod I use my Fenwick Elite Tech Smallmouth 6'10" MF, I can sling tiny poppers with this rod.

I use a 7' Avid ML fast. Yes, it is spinning, but I love it for 1/4 Oz pop r type baits.

This was my first thought since the low rating is 1/8 oz.  Yet it is a medium power rod.  Many Mediums start at 1/4 oz.  Normally a rod performs best with lures somewhere in the middle.  Personally I would prefer a Medium to a ML for bass under most circumstances.  Still, a Medium with a low end of 1/4 oz. may work very well.  Depends on the rod.  I've got a rod marked 3/8 oz. for the low end that I won't use less than 1/2 oz. on, and much prefer heavier than that on this particular rod.  I have no problem with 1/4 oz. on my Medium Falcons which are rated 1/4-1/2 oz.  Also have a Hurricane Redbone rated for 3/8-3/4 oz. that will handle less than its rating quite well.  Only way to know for sure is to try the rod you want....or get advice from people that use the rod you are interested in.  Which is why a forum such as this is a great place to ask questions.  :teeth:

EDIT:  BTW, this rod is one of my favorite Mediums even tho I would prefer a slightly longer handle.  An excellent rod for its price, or even more.

Casting or spinning? Casting rod I use my Fenwick Aetos 6'6" ML-M, it is rated 1/4oz to 1/2oz but I can throw a Rapala #5 Shad Rap with it no problem and that is 3/16oz. Anyway, I got that rod for finesse cranking and now I use it for small jerkbaits as well as small topwaters like the small size Zell Pop now called the Booyah Boss Pop.

I'm bummed that that rod is discontinued as it was perfect for small topwaters and jerkbaits.

If St Croix still has Legend Inshores in their Bargain Room, get the 6'6" MLM. SCIV graphite for $150. Can't beat that.

I am also bummed about that, such a great rod.

I also need a rod for small poppers, not apposed to a spinning rod. If I go casting and fish lakes in Tx I may go MH but think I want a M or MF action. Suprised more guys don't fish M MF actions for topwater treble baits.

I like the Falcon Bucco Micro BMC-72MH for any topwater small than a Spook.  It's a 7ft 2in med-hvy rod, 10-17 lb line, 1/8 to 3/8 oz lures.  I'm a bank fishing guy who prefers that a single rod that can serve multiple techniques.  I throw squarebills,  small jigs, topwaters, small Texas rigged and weightless worms with this.
