soopd Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 I am wanting to start making my own tackle such as shakey heads and bullet weights and eventually jigs. My question is how much can one save by making your own rigs? Would this be something easy to start with? http://www.do-itmolds.com/prodmolds.aspx?c=265 Thanks Quote
BIG M Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 I only build cranks and it's taken me 7yrs to get the point where I can save money building my own. The cost in supplies and equipment doesn't make it a cost saving venture. The feeling of catching fish on a lure you created is priceless. Quote
florida strain Posted April 18, 2010 Posted April 18, 2010 these lures didn't cost me very much to make. i made them from dowel rods, and spray paint, i need to get a paint gun...if you click the pics it comes up better Quote
Super User Jigfishn10 Posted April 18, 2010 Super User Posted April 18, 2010 I make my own Arky Jigs and spinnerbaits. I have the Arky Jig DO-IT mold and I get all the materials from an on-line tackle making store (I'm new to the forum and I'm still learning the do's & don'ts of posting, so I don't know if I can mention the tackle making store I buy from). The initial cost is expensive, but when you break it down, making jigs and spinnerbaits yourself could cost as much as 50% less. Make sure you really heat up the lead prior to pouring in the mold. I went thru my share of hooks before I got the lead to cast right. Good luck, I hope this helps. Florida Strain....NICE lures you built! I've made wooden cranks and can never get the paint job THAT GOOD! Quote
IDbasser Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 I make my own football jigs, shakey heads, drop shot weights, and plain jig heads in various sizes, It is easier for me to get what I want, other than the plain jig heads, I have to order any of the other stuff to get it. It is out of convience for me to make mine. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted April 19, 2010 Super User Posted April 19, 2010 To begin with your baits will be very expensive. Here is a possible breakdown on your first 100 baits. Mold $49 Lead pot $50 Hooks $25 Screw locks $20 Total is $144 or $1.44 for each head. So you will have to make a bunch to see any savings. That said, you can get into the making business and have exactly what you want the way you want it. I have accumulated close to 40 molds for jigs, spoons, spinnerbaits and lots of plastic baits. My latest venture is tube injection. That little project has already cost me $300 and I have only made a couple of dozen tubes but plan to break even one of these days. Quote
Jason Penn Posted April 19, 2010 Posted April 19, 2010 I don't pour any of my own, but I do assemble spinnerbaits and jigs from parts bought online. I've been catching more fish on spinnerbait that I've probably got $1.75-$2 in than the $6-$7 spinnerbaits I have! If you're cool with straight 1 color heads you can get by pretty cheap. If you want multiple color heads with eyes then it will cost you more. The three places I have bought stuff are Barlows, Stamina/Lure Parts Online and Janns Netcraft. If you have plans on making any money at it you would probably need to get setup to pour or buy A LOT at one time from these places. They all have bulk discounts. Quote
