Hey guys, I'm not sure if any of you guys have heard of a stupid tube rig, but it is a technique used mainly in Indiana. It makes a tube weedless but has a unique action and doesn't sacrifice the action of a traditionally rigged tube. I currently throw mine on a 7" medium heavy fast action st croix premier paired with a stradic 2500 fj. I was wondering if Andy of you guys have used this technique and what setup you throw it on.

I've been fishing stupid tubes for years. You definitely need a rod with some backbone to get a good hookset with a tube rigged like that.  I fish them on a st.croix legend tournament 7'1" medium fast spinning rod. That rod seems to be a little stiffer than my other medium st. croix spinning rods.

I'll throw them with my 7' medium avid casting rod if I'm using  1/4 oz or more.

Invizx fluorocarbon 10 lb on both setups.

'Stupid tube' is a brand of jig head. It's a tx rigged tube using a lead jig head. It's nothing new to a lot of people. I use jig heads from Walmart.

There are jig heads called stupid tube heads but there are also stupid tubes. Stupid tube seems to be the name people use now for a tube rigged like the one in the picture.

Perfect rig for smallmouth that live in snaggy rocky rivers.

I'll be darned.  It had never occurred to me to rig a tube that way.   Sometimes, I AM NOT SMART.    That rigging is something that I am for sure going to try next year.   If I had a kinda heavy jig -quarter ounce or better I'd probably throw it on one of my pitching rods.   Going under a quarter ounce, I have several different extra fast tip spinning rods that I think would work for that.  I wonder if I have any 3/8 ox or heavier jig heads that I could thread onto a tube like the picture on Turtle 135's post showed.

Both of the rods I use for tube fishing (including stupid rigging) are med. fast action rods, one spinning and one casting.

The style of head on the jig you use makes a big difference when it comes to ease of rigging.  Some thin walled, narrow bodied tubes will tear on you when rigging them.

how to rig a stupid tube (a great presentation for skipping by the way)

I use a special wide gap hook instead of a jig head and shove a broken piece of Senko in the tube cavity before inserting the hook.  Works like a charm.
