Bass2124 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I was changing the treble hooks today on my one and only LC pointer that I purchased this fall on ebay for $16 and noticed how poor the quality of the split rings were. Very soft and bent all to crap. As I got to thinking, I had to change the hooks on it only after a few weeks of use because they were bent. The paint job is also pretty beat up with quite a bit of hook rash. My other jerkbaits, KVD and Bomber Long A's aren't nearly as beat up (then again I haven't caught as many fish either with those) and I have had them for 2 years. I did check it out and compared it with some google images and it looks identical. Now I have caught a crap load of bass on this jerkbait, way more than any other jerkbait that I have used, so I am not that disappointed but just kinda shocked on the low quality of the components. There is brand name counterfeit going on in the golf industry big time so I was wondering if it is happening in the fishing industry as well? Just a little curious?? Quote
wisconsin heat Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 If it came in it's original packaging I wouldn't be worried about it being a fake. 1 Quote

I was going to say the same thing. A bait not in Original packaging would be a dead give away A-Jay 1 Quote
Bass2124 Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 Oh it was in the original box. It will still get plenty of use and it has been worth the price. I just can't believe the low quality of the hooks and the split rings. I have seen better split rings in the $1 bargain box at Walmart. These things were like butter. Just would like to know if that is just the way Lucky Craft split rings are made as I have never owned one up until now. Quote

Hooks and split rings in the big scheme of things are pretty inexpensive compared to the lure you got. Go fish the H311 out it and make some memories. Good luck! Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted December 29, 2015 Super User Posted December 29, 2015 It is possible. Several years back, we are fairly certain someone on Ebay ran an LCPointer scam. Everything looked normal - packaging, looks, even the name on the bait - only way we were able to suspect something fishy was because the larger versions required as many as 9 SuspenStrips to get them to balance near neutral in the water, very unusual. So I wouldn't rule out anything at this point. Like us, you could create a work around and catch fish, but it's the idea of being scammed that ultimately didn't sit well with us. -T9 Quote
Super User deep Posted December 30, 2015 Super User Posted December 30, 2015 It should say "Pointer SP" on the belly about 2/3rds of the way towards the tail (if it's a real Lucky Craft bait). Quote

Turtle135 Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 The hooks on Pointers are pretty weak. One would expect a bait at that price point would have better hooks but they do not in my opinion. So that would not be an indication of it being a counterfeit. Truly a great lure that probably needs new hooks right out of the package. Quote
RyanFishing Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I've noticed the hooks to be not all that great but have never had any problems with any of the split rings on my pointers. The paint, depending on what color you get, can get beat up pretty easily but still use it! I have a pointer with maybe 10% of the paint on it and it still catches fish. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted December 30, 2015 Super User Posted December 30, 2015 btw ~ if you're going to pick up LC baits on ebay - this is the place to do it. It's the first & only place I purchase LC's from. http://stores.ebay.com/ilovehardbait/ Current there are 9,171 baits available & in stock. Usually there's at least One I like A-Jay 2 Quote

The hardware is just a little cheap as you pointed out which can be remediated with a quick change. I agree one would expect more with a $16 bait. I ordered a Spro Mcstick 110 and a Jackall squad minnow 95 which were about $5 cheaper. I have heard great things about these as well and some like them better than the pointers. Hopefully I will have the same experience as they are more in my price range. KVD's are priced right but they do not produce like the pointer from my experience. Quote

I have found other jerkbaits to be very effective when an active retrieve is the ticket. However, when the water temperature is in the 40 to 50 degree range the Pointers are deadly on river smallmouth and reservoir largemouth. Sometimes they suspend perfectly right out of the package and sometimes I have add to add just the smallest section of fine wire wrapped around the hook shank to get them to suspend perfectly. When you can get one of those Pointers to hang motionless in the water column for 10 to 15 seconds it is usually more than a bass can stand. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted December 30, 2015 Super User Posted December 30, 2015 I have yet to see a Pointer SP knock off? All the fake LC baits that I saw on ebay were slender pointers. Allen Quote
