I don't believe there is a best choice. Really depends upon how you fish them. Braid would be optimal for areas of shallow and dense weed growth. Fishing deep in wood or rocks flourocarbon would be good. If it was also used as your topwater combo mono would be just fine. I have also used copolly but this year I will be going back to mono.

Every year, mid January to early February, Walmart has close outs in the fishing department.   Last years line is frequently closed out.   I just buy a few spools of whatever 17 or 20 lb line is being closed out and use that.  Last year I think it was Suffix Siege, other years it has been Stren Dura-Tuff.   Spinner bait line/square bill line doesn't matter that much to me.   I know I'm going to abuse it and re-spool every few weeks or so during the season.  If I can find it Berkley Iron Silk in 17 or 20 is my first choice for Rattle Baits and square bills.

16 to 20lb Sunline Reaction

I use 17lb trilene xt for my spinnerbaits. There's always a possibility of hooking a northern where I fish, so the big line really helps when that happens. I also use $5 booyah spinnerbaits so I don't get too upset if a big toothy critter takes one.

Thanks everyone.... Any reason to use mono instead of FC or vice versa?

In general, a good mono or co-polymer will stretch less than most fluorocarbon lines.  I use either 12 pound Yo-Zuri Hybrid or Trilene XT for spinnerbait fishing, they both definitely stretch less than any fluoro I've ever used (Berkley, BPS, Sunline, Seaguar, etc).

My spinnerbait rod is generally loaded with 12# CXX, though this past year, I tried Tuf-Line Supercast in a similar diameter (can't remember exactly the size), and I liked the no stretch factor, while avoiding the limpness and noise of traditional braid.  You have to retie often with this line, though not more than with a mono or copoly.

We are infested with the pike in Minnesota as well.  I went to thicker line for awhile (15-20 lb test) but found it suspends more.  I then went back to 12 lb test and started using a tiny 2 inch wire leader that our local bait shop makes (Wayzata Bait and Tackle, they mail them out too).  That extra 2 inches makes a big difference and you wouldn't necessarily think so.  I've been using them 3 years now on spinner baits, cranks and even jerk baits.  I've had only 1 pike bite off during that time.  Great insurance on expensive lures and now I can get deeper in the water column with the thinner line.

I don't find northern pike a huge problem with spinnerbaits, as far as break offs go.  The wire acts as it's own defense.  I lose a couple baits now and again, but it isn't like it is with other baits.

I tend to like 16lb Sniper Sunline as some others here have stated.

If I'm fishing in HEAVY wind... sometimes spinnerbait blades and fluoro don't mix.  In that case, I will go with 15lb Maxima Ultragreen mono.

Interesting to see its pretty split 1/2 and half with mono and flouro with some braid/ hybrid stuff mixed in. I usually use 12 lb. Izorline mono like I do with quite a bit of my reaction baits, but I just bought a couple of spools of Youzuri Hybrid after hearing all the rave reviews. So far, so good...

15lb Big Game. Cheap, very strong, and abrasion resistant. Never had any reason to use anything else.

Same here...sometimes also use 17 lb Big Game.
