Spinner baits?.

So I was at a local pond today has a catwalk around it. 6-8 foot deep clear water with hydrilla and grass 2-3 foot off the bottom with sand patches. I was throwing a strike king white spinner bait double razor blade. I had one hit it but he shook off. I added a trailer hook when I got home. What is the best time of day to try a spinner bait? Should I be using something different I'm in Florida still warm here

I'm sure someone else more professional than me can answer better but I like spinner baits and I throw them all times of the day with success.  But like most any fishing morning and evening will generally get you the better results. .  

I do not use the trailer hook. Slow your presentation down if your out running the fish and or be a tad more patient setting the hook somewhat like frog fishing will cure most of the misses.

Keep throwing em until the fish stop biting. Don't be afraid to fish them in weeds either.

I have success working a spinnerbait in & around shallow to mid-depth structure & cover that has Some Wind Blowing Directly On It.

The longer it's been blowing, the better Like it.

Keep throwing it. I will fish a spinnerbait year round, though I admit, there are better times to throw one. I really like them spring and fall. My favorite is a chart/white single spin with a copper Colorado blade. If the water is still warm, work it where you can barely see it.

One of my very favorite ways to catch smallies during the summer peak is to burn (and I mean REALLY BURN) a white on white double willow bait on long sloping Wind Blown main lake points.

 Either by sitting out off the deep, throwing up shallow or sitting shallow and throwing out off the point and screaming it back to the boat (just under the surface) the super curious and love to chase bronzeness will come up and HAMMER IT ! About rips the rod right out of your hand - I love it.

Clear water is a must and I've had them come up out of 25 feet - sometimes you'll get 6 or 8 Fat brown rockets fighting over it.

Tip - down size the blades, use braid, make long cats and Always use a trailer hook- Oh and Hold ON !

I have fished them quite a bit and found that most of the time I didn't need the trailer hook. I have been fishing the SK bleeding bait series that has the tip of the trailing blade about even with the back of the hook. I found my hook up ratio to be a tad better than with cranks. If I had a spinnerbait where the trailing blade extended a good bit past the hook, I would add a trailer hook  

Two things I have found, on clear water blade color can be huge, I have not caught a fish with anything but silver/chrome blades, regardless of sunny or overcast. Another thing I found is adding a huge trailing blade can be dynamite during post frontal conditions. 

Also with the braid go with a rod with a softer tip or loosen the drag a decent amount. With how hard they hit these, it is not uncommon for the bait to fall right out because they have a hole/tear where the hook penetrated. Steady pressure is a must. Also like cranks, bumping them off of cover can be a very effective trigger.

If I'm fishing shallow I'm throwing a spinner bait 99% of the time. They will bite them at any time. In the middle of summer they are great in shaded areas during the middle of the day. In the spring I catch more spawners with a spinnerbait than everything else combined. If the water is clear I'm throwing white with silver willow blades and a single tail chart trailer. If it's stained or muddy I'm throwing black/blue with a gold Colorado blade and a double tail black trailer. It's noise, it's action, and it's intrigue. 

Here is my experience with trailer hooks. I never used them, never felt like I needed to. A buddy finally talked me into using them. The first time out using one I hook the fish in my avatar picture, my PB. Get it to the boat and sure enough, the trailer hook was right in the dead middle of the inside of its bottom lip. That means he hit it, bumped it, or whatever before it took a bite at it and the spinnerbait was upside down when he actually hit it. 

Whenever I would miss one before that I'd always just thought it hit the blades, no big deal, can't win them all. Since then I can't remember another fish being hooker by the trailer, but there is zero chance I'd ever throw one without it now.

Went out this morning got a 2 pounder on a spinner bait. He nailed it but the trailer hook did get him! Thanks so much for the help everyone! I'm gonna keep throwing them

AJay said it... wind.  not to say it doesn't work otherwise, just my best spinnerbait days include wind.

i would opt for a change in blades if getting short strikes, either change color or size.

matter of personal opinion, but i never use a trailer hook on my spinnerbaits.

If I were to fish just one lure all day long it would be a spinnerbait and ......... actually I have done it so many times that I have forgotten.
