CroakHunter Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 They're a great bait when you think a buzzbait would work, but the buzzbait is just a little to fast. They are pricey, but you shouldn't ever lose a plopper since they are a topwater. I more readily invest in more expensive topwaters than other baits because i should have them for a very long time. A loon colored 90 and 130 is all you really need, no sense in buying multiple colors off the bat. I may have to do it, i have always thought a "slow" buzzbait would be killer when there was a slight chip or at night. My topwater box is quite bare, whopper plopper here I come! 1 Quote
dsqui Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Wow top water already lol I think our lakes up here are still kinda cold they were getting close but this big cold front really dropped the temp 54.2º... I made it out last night caught maybe 8-10 bass and one short walleye all on a jerk bait except the walleye he came on the Ned had allot of biteson drop shot just nothing commited think they were gills or perch grabbing the tail. Bite has been tough since I broke my lucky color waiting for my order of replacements to come in . Quote

BigBassLoveSenkos Posted May 10, 2017 Posted May 10, 2017 Still need to invest in some of those ploppers, just can't bring myself to do it. Dont really enjoy fishing topwater, but I bet they be killer on a lake where one has never been thrown. How can you not enjoy topwater?? Quote

Just like it least. Oh man, you're missing out. In low light conditions, topwater is my goto. Watching the water swell behind a topwater right before it gets inhaled is exciting to me. I live for overcast fall days when I can throw topwater all day. Spro frogs, Gunfish, Ricos, Yellow Magic's, Super Spook Jr's, Evergreens, Imma's, Whopper P's, Kelly J's, love em all! 1 Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 11, 2017 Posted May 11, 2017 Caught another 36 in three and a half hours yesterday. Caught about twenty of them on the whopper plopper while it was still cloudy, and the rest on a shallow shad rap. I decided to try the shad rap when I was throwing the plopper over a bar sticking out from the side of a point, which comes up from 22 feet to 7-8 feet on top of the bar. Had a bass come up behind the plopper and just swirl underneath it four casts in a row, so I picked up the shallow shad rap (there was a patch of weeds I was fishing over that topped out at three feet beneath the surface) and threw it back to to it. Turns out they just wanted something a few feet down instead of on top. Caught the other 16 or so fishing the shad rap just above the grass, ticking it occasionally. 11 keepers, with the best five weighing 13-14 pounds. Water temperature is up to 70 here, and the water clarity is about a foot and a half. 4 Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Not sure if I already mentioned this or not... But the tournament at geist was cancelled due to logs and junk that was washed in with the flooding. Which worked out OK for us, cause we hadn't got the motor working yet anyways. So they are awarding double points for this next tournament on Monroe next Sunday, to make up for the cancelled tournament. So does anyone have any reports out of monroe, and do you know what the water temperature is? Any areas (even just upper or lower end) that are good right now? What phase do you think they will be in, and are there any hot techniques there? Feel free to pm me. Not sure weather it will be post spawn or spawn, or a little bit of both. Thanks for helping with all of my previous questions, this will be the last tournament for the year unless we make the state championship. Quote
dsqui Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Last tournament for the year man it's awfully early for it to be the last one Quote
Cole Richards Posted May 14, 2017 Posted May 14, 2017 Caught a few nice bass yesterday pictured , about 15 total on Webster lake . Bass were caught on Texas rigged craws in 18 fow and spinnerbaits in the shallow weeds . I also managed to catch my 1st ever Muskie yesterday , it was on 24 inches long but it was still really cool , about 30 minutes latter I caught another 20 inch Muskie . 2 in one day is pretty cool even if they were small ones ! 4 Quote
hoosierbass07 Posted May 15, 2017 Posted May 15, 2017 Fished Chinook fish and wildlife area for the first time today in a canoe. Only fished a few hours, had two bites and caught one small one on a weightless senko: 3 Quote
neocrunch Posted May 17, 2017 Posted May 17, 2017 I got into some bass on the White River right in the heart of Muncie (under the Washington St. bridge) this morning. 5 Quote

neocrunch Posted May 18, 2017 Posted May 18, 2017 Took a little drive out to the covered bridge in Matthews this morning and hooked into a few more. There were snakes EVERYWHERE. I'm not kidding... I must have seen at least 20 snakes during the hour I was there. 1 Quote

They scare the crap out of me when they go shooting out from between your feet. I had one grab a tiny bluegill I caught. He had to of been laying between my feet for awhile and I had no clue he was there. Quote
BoilerFisherman Posted May 21, 2017 Posted May 21, 2017 Hey y'all. new to the forum, and relatively new to serious bass fishing. I am live downtown Indy, and would love to find some people to fish with around Indianapolis. 1 Quote

frosty Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 (edited) Well I got a few hours in tonight. I caught about 20 bass, I'd estimate 90% were 1 1/2 - 2 pounds! My knuckles and arm hurts so I know it was an awesome day of fishing! I caught them on a yellow and purple yo-zuri jerkbait, I lost it, caught a few on an off brand jerkbait, then caught the biggest ones on Fogy chatterbait from siebert outdoors. It was a blast, then my wife showed up with our 3 year old, they had a good time then my wonderful bride waded out in waist deep water and retrieved my jerkbait I also caught about 5 bluegill on that yo-zuri jerkbait! frosty Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Oh and another interesting thing happened, I had a bass poop on me I've been fishing for a lot of years and I don't think I've ever had a fish poop on me? Worst smelling stuff EVER ? 1 Quote

Worst smelling stuff EVER ? Sounds like you had a sh!++y day During tournaments, I usually treat my livewell to keep the water from fouling due to both that and fish urine. I got out Saturday evening right at sunset and caught 15 on 30 or 40 casts with a rico popper. Was a blast! Got out again yesterday afternoon and they were slamming my new magabass jerkbait. Once the sun got behind the trees, I was able to keep catching them with a neko rig. I spent less than 5 hours fishing this entire weekend but caught somewhere between 60 and 70 total bass. Spring fishing is the best! 2 Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Ended up in 18th place out of 84 boats on Monroe yesterday, with only two fish for 4.68 pounds. Frustrating part was that we were hooking fish that would have put us in the top four or possibly top three, between us setting the hook to soon on the topwater and the fish rapping us around all of the brush, we only landed two keepers to the six or seven we saw and lost. You could see them coming up through the clear water to hit usually, and a couple cleared the water before landing on the bait, so I couldn't get my nerves calmed down enough to wait till the fish really had the topwater. Most fish, including our larger keeper, hit a lunkerhunt pocket frog with upsized hooks and skirt legs until I hung our only pocket frog fifteen feet up a tree half way through the day, then most of our hits were on a pop x. Our other keeper was caught flipping a jig, but that was the only hit we got doing that. Also lost a keeper each on a bubblegum trick worm, shaky head, and half of a zinkerz. Mostly fishing the backs of spawning coves in and around floating logs and debris. Who's going to the state championship hasn't been finalized yet, so we don't know if we're in that or not yet. One thing i am glad of is we have the highest number of points of anybody who missed a tournament, so at least we're consistant. Doesn't matter for state qualification though obviously. Thanks everyone who gave advice and tips for the tournaments, they were a big help. 4 Quote
CroakHunter Posted May 22, 2017 Posted May 22, 2017 Got out for an hour or so yesterday at one of my favorite large ponds. Took my daughter and wife. Between the three of us we caught a 1 rock bass, 3LMB, and 4 catfish. Good day to end a 70hr work week. 1 Quote
