Josh Smith Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 Caught this lil' lady before the front Sunday. She practically choked on a Mann's spinnerbait. 1lb, 3oz. Not huge, but nice, and she did aerial acrobatics for me. She was full of eggs. I'm sorry for the poor pic. A new phone is in the works. I sometimes think about taking a real camera with me, but just don't want to bother with it. 3 Quote

I found a couple clearer coves with three to for feet of visibility and sight fished for bedding bass there. I slowly moved around near the shorelines looking for a bass worth spending a little time on and then rotated between the trd, a crawbug, a jig, a split shot rigged lizard, and a small two inch paddle tail grub until I found what that particular bass wanted. It was a lot of fun watching the bass and there reactions, plus since I could almost pick which fish I caught the smallest bass out of twenty three still weighed 1.8 pounds and the largest was 4.4. The weather was great to, much better than yesterday's. Have you fished any of the tourneys out there yet? You should have jumped into Sunday's event - you would have smoked them from the sounds of it. Staff at the marina told me it only took 10 or 11 pounds to win that morning (5 fish). Word was they bit a lot better on Saturday during the rain, then kind of shut down on Sunday for most of the guys. I've been leaving the bass alone and messing with other fish out there. Got into a good group of white bass Saturday evening and landed just over 90 - they had shut down though by Sunday, too. Water is getting too clear out there. We need some more rain -T9 1 Quote
BrianMRetter Posted May 2, 2016 Posted May 2, 2016 I'm finally having some degree of success. Private 10 acre stone quarry pond in Randolph county. This is considered a small bass for this honey hole, however it's my personal best. The water clarity is insane, between 10-15ft. Wacky rigged senko/Green Pumpkin Magic. 4 Quote

That is some crazy water clarity . I would throw a swimbait every day all day. Especially if there are big fish . 2 Quote

Did you catch these bad boys today? I haven't seen the sun at all and I'm rather jealous. I want to get out and do some fishing but these cold fronts are telling me no. Quote
neocrunch Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 I have Thursday off so I plan on going fishing all day. I'm trying to decide where to go. So far this spring, I've been to Mississinnewa Reservoir, Geist Reservoir, and Summit Lake. If the weather is crappy I might just go to Summit again (it's only 30 minutes away). Or I might go down to Brookville. Any suggestions on where I should go kayak fishing next? Quote
BrianMRetter Posted May 3, 2016 Posted May 3, 2016 No these were yesterday between 5-7pm. Also had a few Rock Bass. The LMB weren't extremely active, but also not in a negative mood. They were cruising between some submerged wood cover, and the dock. What kind of swimbait should I have thrown? It was difficult to get them to bite even the wacky rig. I live roughly 45mins from Summit. I like kayaking there, but you should try Westwood Run (15 mins from Summit). It has a good amount of 3-4lb bass, and it's the perfect size for kayaking. 2 Quote

Do you think it would be best to wait for a cold front, or do the next one in two weeks so they will still hopefully be up shallow? 1 Quote

If you go to Brookville the white bass are running up the head water and largemouth are stacked up in Silver Creek which is also near the head of the lake. There's a boat ramp inside Whitewater State Park on Brookville Lake that puts you right where I'm talking about. Also the walleye are up cruising the flats by the northern causeway. I'll be there on Friday after I finish my finals that morning! Edit: Here's a sweet graphic I whipped up. 2 Quote

Bass had total lock jaw from all these fronts comming through. First blank of the year for me.? 1 Quote

The only problem is my dad hasn't bass fished for three years, and has only fished for bass about a dozen times in his life. So i'm probably going to have to pick up his slack, but I am a competitive person so it's still gonna be really fun and we might just get some money. Do you think it would be best to wait for a cold front, or do the next one in two weeks so they will still hopefully be up shallow? I'd shoot for the next one in two weeks (5/15) while they're still shallow. Will likely still be some on beds even. Once those fish go post spawn and start feeding up again as well as moving toward deeper water, you'll likely be at a disadvantage, and the weights will start going up again. Next one is 6:30-11:30am. Maybe play the weather a bit to make sure it's not pouring rain all morning 1 Quote

Do they immediately pull back off the beds into deeper water and follow the channel, or do they follow docks and other cover out to the main lake? I've never actually never fished for post spawn bass before, in the past I always crappie fished during that period. Thanks for all of the advice! Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I fished this afternoon for about two hours. The cold front shut them down, and it had a cold wind and just enough rain to make everything wet. Caught fourteen fish, but they were all dinks except for two decent fish at fourteen-fifteen inches. Unfortunately the water clarity is down to a foot and a half thanks to all of he rain, it was really fun being able to watch there reactions and the size was great. I used half of a zinkerz fished with a swim glide and shake retrieve fished in two to five feet of water on the edges of docks and between them over spawning areas. Quote

How fast fish move varies on a variety of factors, but the fact that you have so much cover (docks, weeds, etc.) shallow, along with the bluegills that will be moving in to spawn soon, will end up keeping quite a few fish shallow. Don't forget topwaters and shallow cranks as these fish go post-spawn. Males will hang around and guard fry for about 2 weeks in the shallows before leaving them and resuming normal daily life, while the females will pull off slightly deeper to recover from spawning. 9 hours ago, IndianaFinesse said: I fished this afternoon for about two hours. I am planning on heading out to cataract Friday afternoon, is anyone else planning on being out there? According to the Corp., Cataract is 14' over pool, so no, I'll be passing on that lake and looking elsewhere Good luck though! -T9 1 Quote
Alan Reed Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 Pick up a new spinning rod to compliment my bait caster for those light lures today. I got a BPS Carbonlite 6'9" Medium Light fast rod with a Shimano 2000FE reel. Going to try to get out tomorrow afternoon and then the wife wants to go fishing on Sunday. 2 Quote
neocrunch Posted May 5, 2016 Posted May 5, 2016 I went to Westwood Lake in New Castle today. Thanks for the suggestion, Brian, it was a beautiful park. It was cold and windy. I didn't land any giants but I caught enough bass to keep it interesting. I will definitely be going back. 2 Quote

OddChase Posted May 6, 2016 Posted May 6, 2016 Slow fishing today on the river. Got 4 very small male white bass in about 4 hours. Very few fish besides walleye were being caught at Brookville. Might try going out this evening. Quote
Cole Richards Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 Had a family picnic by the lake tonight , decided to take a spinning rod with a shakey head tied on from last trip along just in case . Turns out that some nice fish were on the beds in the chanels tonight . Flipped a shakey head with a z-man hula stick to the beds with some great results . Who new that there would be some pretty nice fish by the shops tonight . It was refreshing to go simple tonight and walking bank got me to some areas I could never take my boat . The little man really loves it when dad catches the big ones ! 3 Quote
IndianaFinesse Posted May 7, 2016 Posted May 7, 2016 I changed my mind on going to cataract this morning when i looked at the Louisville daily lake report that stated the lake is fourteen feet high and they are letting 1200 cubic feet of water per second from the dam. i mighty have gone even though would have to launch the boat from the road, but when they are letting that much water out it really trashes the fishing so instead we went to raccoon. The crappie at raccoon are in that very late stages of the spawn and in the early post-spawn funk, but we still managed 29 crappie and one bonus carp. They are up in three to ten feet of water holding tight to the abundant brush, and we were catching them two to three feet down on tubes and minnows. I tried the adjust a bubble with a small tube underneath like oddchase suggested (thanks oddchase) and caught the majority of the fish twitching it every minute or two and then letting it set. The carp are beginning to move up shallow to spawn, the one I caught was making its bed when it decided to nail my minnow. I know most people look down on carp, but it sure put up a heck of a fight on a ten foot light powered crappie rod.. Thanks for the help team 9. 1 Quote
