jonathan creason Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 I have a 6500 that's giving me some trouble, and was hoping some of you guys might be able to help me figure it out. When you engage the clutch, about half the time I will not release when I start turning the handle. The handle will just spin until the trigger finally catches and releases. I tore it down and cleaned everything up, hoping some cruddy old grease was causing it to stick, which seems to have helped some. It hasn't completely fixed the issue, though. Anyone out there have any idea of what I need to do? Quote
FloridaFishinFool Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Here is the link to the abu schematic page you may find your reel listed: http://www.abugarcia.com/AbuGarcia-reel-schematics.html Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted December 22, 2015 Super User Posted December 22, 2015 @Josh Smith and DVT might be the best ones to answer your questions here. Seems like Josh uses exclusively round Abu's, so he may have experience with this. 1 Quote
Tim Kelly Posted December 22, 2015 Posted December 22, 2015 Most likely the release arm is worn. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/timkelly/lasreel%20maintanence2.html Quote

Anyone out there have any idea of what I need to do? Hello, First, what year is it? Is it an old-style or a new UltraCast model? Is the tension knob on the side opposite the reel handle, or same side? Start by cleaning it. I've seen gunk keep these from releasing, but it really has to be gunked up. Otherwise, it's going to be the release arm like Tim Kelly said, or if it's an older model, one of the dual release arms, though I've never seen one of those worn out. I'll watch this thread. jonathan creason Posted December 23, 2015 Author Posted December 23, 2015 Thanks everyone. I tore it down and gave it a real thorough cleaning again. There was some nasty gunk under the pivot end of the release arm I missed the first time around. Seems to be working ok now. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted December 24, 2015 Posted December 24, 2015 sounds like you have it under control. The importance of keeping reels clean is hard to overstate. Quote
