Bass Scents

Could someone suggest a good bass scent. I do not know enough about them to make a good judgement but would like to give them a try.

Great question with a lot of different answers.

Here is my two cents for you to ponder.  The guys will add to the info.

1.  Take anise seeds (aniseed) and mix them with cooking oil and heat it up in a pot on the stove.  Let mixture cool and place your plastics in a plastic bag with the solution. Soak 24-48 hours before going fishing.

2.  Consider using Jack's Juice as the attractant.  Nice spray and I like the garlic flavor.

3.  Ever think of putting some vanilla extract on your plastics?  What about anise extract from the bottle?  Use an eyedropper to spread the extract on your bait. Give it a try and see what happens.

4. Mega-Strike is an excellent gel to use as is Carolina Lunker Sauce.

5.  Soak a cotton ball with your favorite scent and stuff it into a tube.

You can always spray, rub or soak your plastics for 24 to 48 hours before you go fishing if you want the scent to impregnate the bait. Other than for your wife or mother complaining about the smell there should be no problems.

Your hands will smell great for at least three days after using the baits!

I use attractants for two purposes first as a lubricant because I fish in grass a lot and the attractant helps my plastic baits slide through easier.  I use Fish Formula II or Baitmate (clear) with a ½ oz of pure anise oil added; this is to mast any odor my plastic may have pick up.

Right now I'm experimenting with Megastrike, but I also keep a bottle of Anise Extract in my bag too. It's something my grandfather showed me way back in the day. He used to use 6" black plastic worms with a little bit of extract on them. Old School baby

Hmmm, I wonder where that chart is that another member posted a couple of months ago (I think it was a Berkley lab test) showing bass retention times for various ingredients.  

If I remember right, Garlic and Anise were two of the least preferred flavors by bass and were spit out very quickly, and that earthworm extract was by far the best, followed by a shad extract.  

I usually don't even use "scents" - - but if I did, I would be hunting down some earthworm or shad based formulas.

That's interesting since anise oil is added to more plastics that any other scents

I use it as well but more to hide my scent then anything. I also use Yum spray and Megastrike for the same reason.

Walk up & down any aisle in any tackle store smelling each name brand of plastic for anise or garlic. Bet you right now the results will be at least 75% will have either anise or garlic, yet Berkley says these two scents are the least preferred flavors by bass and were spit out very quickly.

My guess would be that anise and garlic based formulas are FAR CHEAPER to to produce than an earthworm extract based formula - - additionally, these mfg's realize that most bass fishermen really believe that garlic and anise are like candy for bass.      

I'll believe half the stuff tackle mfg's try to make us believe when they prove it scientifically.   I obviously wasn't there to witness the Berkley Lab, so who knows.....but right now it's the only study I've seen.  Perhaps there are more out there - - I'd be interested in seeing them if there were.

I like to add Carolina Lunker Sauce to the packages of my soft plastics so they can aborb the scent.  I'll put Mega-Strike   on the lure just before I use it.

I use the Berkley Trout Attractant for brookies and it works fgood for me. They have bass staff too so I am guessing its good too.

I used to be on the sauce, but not anymore. I fish with a guy who sauces all the time and he's not catching any more fish than I do!  : ;D

I use scents mainly to cover man/manmade odors.I've used Yum shad and garlic.I've also used Bang garlic.I'm currently using Gamefisher that has an anise smell to it.I've had best results with the Gamefisher believe it or not.

You guys might find it interesting that they also dipped a cotton swab in moter oil and the bass bit without spitting it out right away. Kinda cruel if you ask me but it aparrently had no adverse effects.   Also Bass despise Deet found in bug repealent.  It is an absoulute turn off.   So I wouldn't worry to much about manmade oders other that deet.
