Hey guys I just bought a couple of extra bait casting reels.  And decided to use one for top water.  Since I don't have a top water specific rod.

But I just figured out I don't no what I'm even looking for.  Lol.  What action rod works best for say buzz baits and frogs.

Whats everyone using?

Go with MH/Fast action with mono or braid with mono leader.  Or MH/Moderate action with straight braid.  I go with the former with good results.

For the two baits you have listed, I would use two different rods. I have a 7'3" mhf (rated to 1.5oz so really a heavy)  for frogs, and use my 7' mhf spinnerbait rod for buzz baits.  For other top waters like spooks and poppers, I use a 6'8" mxf so it's easier to work the baits with the rod tip down.

I use a 634CB Dobyns Med, mod-fast action for jerkbaits but also use for topwater. For dedicated topwater rod though, may get fast action in future. However this rod really works bait great on top so may stick with it, plus it really pins fish and lets them grab bait before hook sets too quickly.

I use a Falcon "Carolina Lizard Dragger" rod with 30# braid as my all around top water and swim bait rod. The rod itself is ideal for action and power. Useing 30# braid is not in all conditions,  but all of my combo's have to do double duty.

Yup, two different rods.  For the frog rod I would go 7'-7 1/2' MH-H Fast action 50lb braid, this could also double for some medium sized swimbaits, like the Mattlures U2 Bluegill.

The other would be a 7' M fast action rod with 12lb. mono. this could be used for most topwater lures.

I would always suggest a fast action or tapered rod for topwaters, the fast action will give you better control when you are snapping the rod tip for "walk the dog" techniques.

If you're looking for to buy just one rod, go with atleast a 7 foot heavy fast action. You're going to want a fast tip when you're working that frog through vegetation and enough back bone to hammer those thick hooks home. As for fishing buzz baits normally you'd want a MH fast or mod/fast but just go a little softer on the hook set and you'll be fine. Throw 40-65# braid for frogs depending on the conditions you fish and when fishing buzz baits, use a copolymer or mono leader 10-15# it'll give you the forgiveness you're going to be lacking using a heavy action rod. Tight lines!

Thanks guys.  I've got a boat load of MH rods.  Il turn one into a froging rod. I've got a metal bodied Jhonny Morris that would work great with large braid.

And i think il try a M Fast Duckett Ghost with mono for the buzz baits.  My hook sets are far to fast.

Ive been using my Duckett micro magic crank bait rod for Pop R,s . Man it will sling them out there.  And walks them with ease.
