Greenbrier Angler Posted December 20, 2015 Posted December 20, 2015 Hey guys anyone familiar with this reel? I was wondering what you guys thought about it, I want a finesse reel for my Aetos 6'6 mlmc rod i just purchase. I'm trying to decide between the lews tourney light and this reel. What I'm wondering is if I go with the Daiwa wich gear ratio to go with as there is only two 5:8.1 and 7:2.1 i want it for shallow cranks 1-8 foot and some poppers and torpedos. This will be a river set up for smallies. Any help would be great thanks guys. Quote

I would personally go /w the alphas SV in 7:2 for what you want to use it for. I don't like Lews reels but a lot of people do. 1 Quote
Hogsticker Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 Whatever Lews reel you're considering, it won't give you the same casting capabilities as the Alphas SV. The spools are to heavy and hold too much line. I'm sure they will cast a quarter ounce fine, but if you're looking to go lower, especially with billed baits, the SV technology will get you there. 1 Quote

Excellent condition used can be had for less than $250. Quote

I'd recommend it over any reel in the Lew's line-up for casting very light lures. I have an Alphas SV105 and several Lew's Tournament Pros. Tight lines, Bob 1 Quote
5fishlimit Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 It's a fantastic reel, and I would go with the higher gear ratio for what you are looking to do with it. I also recommend buying the JDM Alphas SV from any of the reputable Japanese online vendors. You'll save yourself about $75 over the USDM version. Quote

Greenbrier Angler Posted December 21, 2015 Author Posted December 21, 2015 Thanks for the suggestions guys looks like I'm gonna grab a alphas sv105sh from Japan Lure Shop. Ive never bought from them, I hope they are on the up n up. I see they are Pay Pal so that's reassuring. I saw where Digitaka was cheaper Anyone ever had any dealings with them? Quote

Silas Posted December 21, 2015 Posted December 21, 2015 I've bought several reels from Digitaka. Often they are cheaper. And shipping is quick! I have the SV 105 from them. Unlike the others who have high praise for the reel, I'm a bit indifferent. I much prefer my Red Airy, and 2004 Purple Alpha, And Orange Alpha, and Scorpion 1000XT However it is a great reel for the price. I bought one just to see what the hoopla was about. In my case, I've pretty much fished Bait Finesse ALL my life. Before they came up with the word. So it's not a dramatic difference from what I own. I DO feel it is a terrific beginning bait-casters reel since with the SV spool you can get by with an "ignorant thumb." And-----I let my brother who has a "mentally Challenged thumb " use it so he doesn't spend all of his time sorting out backlashes. It would make a great gift for Christmas Quote

However, I only used it a few minutes, so I am hoping to be impressed after I get to spend a bit more time with it. As you know I am a bit of a fan of Daiwa reels. Two reels that did impressed me from the get-go were the Pinnacle Primmus and Okuma Helios Air. Quote

The SV spool with its light weight and strong braking profile seems to be more about skipping small plastics and jigs rather than bombing small plugs for max distance in open water. I bought my Alphas SV just for pitching and skipping small jigs and unweighted salt impregnated plastics, but if I was looking for a small plug finesse baitcaster like OP I'd probably get the centrifugal braking Liberto Pixy SPR or a yumeya spooled Shimano product. 1 Quote
