Hi guys , Last year I bought a new Lowe Skorpion with a 20hp ELPT merc , While it runs great ,as you can imagine ,it does have it limitations , I have the opportunity to swap it out for a new (2015) 40hp Elpt merc for 3 grand ,What would you do ???  opinions are always welcome ... Thanks

I would go with the 40hp. Had one years back on a Bass Tracker and it was a great motor. Never had any problems with it.

Looking at it strictly from a money angle, your 20hp is NADA values at $2690 - $3025.  The suggested retail on a new (unused) 2015 40 is $6435.  So, to me, the money looks ok.  Does this include removing and reinstalling the engine or is that extra?  The jump up in HP will definitely make a big difference in your boat.

If you can afford it, why not? As long as your boat is rated for it and the money won't bother you too much I'd guess that 40 would feel night and day over the 20.

I would definitely do it.  Your boat will be faster and perform better even at slower speeds. Also the boat combo will be worth more at resale time.  The Lowe Skorpions were good boats. You should have a good time on it.

I would definitely upgrade your motor.  The boat will perform better, both at top end and at slower speeds (remember you have more prop options with the bigger motor).   At cruise you may save some fuel as well.  At resale time your combo will be more valuable. The Skorpions were nice boats, so you should get a lot of fun out of it.  I own a Lowe Stinger 170 and have fished different bodies of water in five states with it.

I have a 2014 Merc 40HP EFI four-stroke, and it's the quietest, most fuel-efficient engine I've ever owned.  It pushes my Tracker Pro170 along just fine and it makes me smile every time I check the fuel tank!  I have 200+ hours on it, and it has performed faultlessly.

Tight lines,

Bob

Get the bigger motor if you can swing it. It's the one thing I wish I would have done when I bought my Tracker PT170 new 10 years ago. Being new to boats, I didn't know any better and just went with the 25hp 4-stroke offered in the base package. And while the motor has been very reliable, and pushes the boat around fine when I am by myself, adding a 2nd person and there gear makes it a dog.

Go with the 40 you will not be disappointed!

While researching motors before I bought my Tohatsu, I found out Honda makes Mercury, Suzuki, & Tohatsu.

My 2014 Tohatsu 40 pushes my Alweld at 50 mph while burning no fuel.

I've owned several boats and never found myself thinking "I wish my boat had a smaller motor".

I have a 1991 elpto 2 stroke 4 cyl oil injected Mercury. Still running great 24 years later.  Its on a 16 foot Lund.  Good on gas.  Gets up to 29mph with two people. Easy to service. Good luck.

I personally would upgrade to the 40hp you will be able to run faster and take on things that ur 20hp could not do.
